It's Time To Fix Social Security

Dear Automat,

As we've all come to see through this year 's debate, the current Social Security system is financially unsustainable for future generations of Americans. We need to make sure when our children and grandchildren retire, they will receive the benefit that today's retirees currently enjoy. The problem is, every year we wait will cost $600 billion more to fix the problem.

We need to pass Social Security reform this year and we need your help today.

Will you call Senator Barbara Boxer at 202-224-3553 and Senator Dianne Feinstein at 202-224-3841 today and ask them to reform Social Security now?

Since his State of the Union speech in February, President Bush has shown remarkable leadership by traveling the country, talking to Americans about the challenges facing Social Security and the need for personal accounts to be a part of that solution. Simply put, personal accounts will help secure Social Security for future generations and allow younger Americans to grow a nest egg they own and can pass on to whomever they want .

Soon, Congress will start drafting legislation to make sure Social Security remains solvent for our children and grandchildren in the future. Call Senator Barbara Boxer at 202-224-3553 and Senator Dianne Feinstein at 202-224-3841. Tell them now is the time to come to the table with real ideas on how to fix Social Security .

Then sign our petition to show your support for the President and Republican's efforts to fix Social Security.

What Howard Dean's plan means

Dear Automat,

Contribute Today!

In these troubled days for our country, Americans are tired of this rubber-stamp Republican leadership forcing its will on the country. People are ready to stand up for the nation's best ideals, and it couldn't come at a more important time.

This administration and its Republican lap-dog Congress think they have a mandate to reverse much of the progress we have fought so hard to achieve.

Under Howard Dean's leadership, Democrats are fighting back. Our party is energized, and ready to fight for our values on every major issue. I can't overstate what an effect it has here in Washington knowing that, all across the country, Democrats are standing with us.

Now we have a chance to send another powerful message to President Bush and the Republican Congress. As the first half of 2005 comes to a close, we can show our strength with a last-minute surge of grassroots support that matches the Republican special interest payoffs.

Show your support by making a donation to the Democratic Party today:

This is about more than just sending a message. It's about making sure the Democratic Party is stronger and more effective than ever before. It's about competing in all 50 states so that Democrats across the country have the same strong voice.

Howard Dean is showing us the way with his comprehensive plan to get there. Your support right now will make us stronger in every region of the country. You'll help us compete with Republicans in every race, at every level.

Please join Howard Dean and me by sending your immediate support:

The stakes couldn't be higher. We know what President Bush and the Republican Congress have to offer. You and I and the Democratic Party can change all that and restore America's ideals.

Thank you for doing what's right for America.

Dianne Feinstein. You. The next 12 hours.
Critical Deadline Tomorrow -- Make a Contribution to Senator Feinstein Today

Dear Friend,

We have less than 12 hours to give Senator Dianne Feinstein's re-election campaign an enormous boost.

The critical June 30th fundraising deadline arrives at midnight tonight. I'm urging you and other committed California Democrats to act. Rush an immediate donation to the Feinstein campaign.

Senator Feinstein has been a courageous leader for the people of California and America. Whether it's working to make America safer at home and abroad, combating crime and violence, or protecting our natural resources, Senator Feinstein is a leader the people of America can count on.

With potential vacancies to the Supreme Court looming on the horizon, I am dedicated to doing whatever I can to keep leaders like Dianne Feinstein in the U.S. Senate. We're dedicated to pulling out all the stops to help Senate candidates like Dianne Feinstein who are on the Republicans' list to try and defeat.

You can help keep America's promise right here at home in California by acting today to keep Dianne Feinstein in the U.S. Senate.

For twelve years now, Dianne has been a forceful, independent voice for California. We need that voice in the Senate now more than ever.

Don't hesitate for a moment. With the deadline fast approaching, it's vitally important that you act.

Contempt for Democracy

Dear Friend,

George Bush wanted to go to war in Iraq in the WORST possible way -- and he did.

On Tuesday night, President Bush missed an opportunity for straight talk to the American people. The President's frequent references to the terrorist attacks of September 11 show the weakness of his arguments. He is willing to exploit the sacred ground of 9/11, knowing that there is no connection between 9/11 and the President's pre-emptive strike in Iraq.

It's clear that President Bush and the architects of the Iraq War will never be held accountable by a Republican Congress. That's why we need to win back a House majority in 2006, so we can ask the tough questions -- and demand some real answers.

Your immediate contribution will help make that possible. We Democratic House Members are so committed to that effort that, through midnight on June 30th, we'll match your Internet contribution dollar-for-dollar.

It's so important that we reach our goal because you know as well as I do that the Republicans are out of control.

Drunk on power, President Bush and his Congress have plundered the U.S. Treasury and turned record surpluses into record deficits.

They have sunk to new depths of corruption in Congress, selling votes and control over the national agenda to greedy special interests.

And they have systematically abused the authority of their offices, running roughshod over our American tradition of checks and balances in order to push their extremist agenda. With a Supreme Court fight looming, we may not have seen the worst of it yet.

There is only one way to stop them - by winning a Democratic Majority next November.

The 2006 mid-term elections are ours for the taking, but we need your immediate support. I urge you to make a secure, online contribution to the DCCC today.

As DCCC Chairman Rahm Emanuel told you in his recent email, your support is so important right now that the Democratic Members of the U.S. House of Representatives have dug into our own pockets to create an "EARLY MONEY" MATCHING GIFT CHALLENGE.

Every contribution the DCCC receives by June 30th will be matched - dollar for dollar!

Make a secure, online contribution to the DCCC. Your gift will be doubled and help provide the early money we urgently need to end the GOP's reign of corruption.

From their unconscionable holding up of stem cell research, to their shameful intrusion into the medical care of Terri Schiavo, to their threats to go "nuclear" by overturning the judicial filibuster, the arrogant Republicans have proven they are totally out of touch with the concerns of everyday Americans.

With your contribution today, which will be doubled, we will recruit the best candidates and provide them the resources they need to hit the campaign trail and tell the voters how Democrats are fighting for:

  • Fully funding stem cell research to offer hope to those suffering from Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, diabetes, spinal cord injuries and other tragic conditions.
  • Retirement security that doesn't squander the Social Security surplus, and doesn't subject seniors' hard-earned retirement savings to the risks of the stock market;
  • A fully funded Medicare program with a no-gimmicks prescription drug benefit;
  • Guarding our children's future by increasing, not cutting, funding for education;
  • Protection of our working families by extending unemployment benefits in one of the worst economic downturns in recent history;
  • Honoring our commitment to our nation's veterans by increasing, not cutting, their benefits.

These are some of the issues that first made me seek election to Congress as I saw the damage a Republican President could do.

Our only hope to enact this Democratic agenda for America, and stop the Republicans from doing greater damage to our future, is to win a Democratic Majority in 2006.

And that fight begins today, with YOU. Help us end the Republican Assault on America. Please make your strongest contribution to the DCCC today so that it can be doubled as part of our Matching Gift Challenge.

Nancy Pelosi
Democratic Leader

P.S. America cannot afford to allow George W. Bush to enact his extreme agenda, aided and abetted by a right-wing Republican Congress. We need a Democratic House to check his power. And we cannot afford to wait another day before launching our campaign efforts in all 50 states.
So don't wait, support the DCCC today and your gift will be doubled!

Forward this to five friends.

Shift the balance of power

Dear Automat,

Contribute Today!

I want to talk to you about the balance of power in politics -- between Republicans and Democrats, and between big money from corporate interests and small-dollar donations from regular people. Things are changing, and right now we have an opportunity to impact politics for a generation. Let me explain.

As 2004 geared up, Bush was expected to out-raise the Democratic candidate by $100 million or more. Early on, Democrats realized that we couldn't compete with a political money machine so willing to sell out the American people for huge checks from lobbyists and corporate interests.

So we went to the people. The Democratic candidates proved a new model -- that ordinary people giving $50 here and there could actually finance a campaign. Put together, all of the Democratic candidates far out-raised Bush -- and John Kerry's campaign was able to do the unthinkable and level the financial playing field.

That happened because ordinary Democrats decided to take responsibility for financing the campaign. But that commitment needs to carry over into taking responsibility for building our party -- so that we can lay the necessary groundwork to win elections for decades to come:

You can't build what you need to win a presidential campaign by starting in an election year -- and that's in large part why they won. Republicans have been building for decades.

It is during off-years like this one when infrastructure is built (or not) and volunteers are trained (or not) -- the money we raise in 2005 has as much (if not more) to do with winning in 2008 than whatever we raise that year.

In this period during 2003, the last off-year, Republicans out-raised us nearly four to one. This year, thanks to unprecedented support from ordinary people making contributions of whatever they can afford, we have cut that gap nearly in half. Meanwhile, the Republicans are stagnant -- ordinary people have grown the base of financial support for the Democratic Party, while the Republicans' numbers are more or less the same as two years ago. We're gaining on them.

We are on the verge of doing something historic. You can shift the balance of power between the two parties and build our capacity to win elections for the long term. Please make a donation of whatever you can afford now:

On Monday Governor Dean announced 'Democracy Bonds' -- a new initiative to build a sustainable financial infrastructure for our party by focusing on small monthly gifts of whatever people can afford. The response was overwhelming -- the number of Democrats committed to giving monthly jumped by 50% in less than 24 hours.

The 'Democracy Bond' initiative is about shifting the balance of power towards the people. The Republicans raise $10 million a month from lobbyists and special interests -- we can double that if a million Democrats give $20 a month to make our party sustainable for the long term. We all know who owns the Republican Party -- but ordinary Americans will own our party.

Whether you can afford to make a monthly commitment or not, it's important to give now. Everything we raise in 2005 is a commitment to 2008 and the next generation of Democratic victories:

We have an important opportunity right now to seize this moment and reshape American politics forever. We have to build this party in all 50 states, and we have to build it from the ground up.

If we don't act now, when will we?

Thank you for all of your support.

Actions Speak Louder than Words

Dear Friend,

Last night the President had a chance to move the country forward by laying out a specific course of action to make our troops safer and rescue the mission in Iraq.

Instead, the President took us backwards -- backwards to campaign style rhetoric and unshakeable stubbornness.

Let me be clear about something. I've never met an American who doesn't want to see America succeed in Iraq. I've never met a veteran who doesn't fly the flag on the 4th of July with pride in our country. I've never met an American who doesn't believe in the greatness of our country and the strength of our ideals.

But I've met a lot of Americans who fear the President has no plan to get it right in Iraq -- and they woke up this morning feeling the same way.

The President and the administration need to get their story straight about what is happening in Iraq -- and how they are going to get our mission back on track.

From their 24th different rationale for war, to the Vice President and Secretary Rumsfeld telling us the insurgency is in its "final throes" while last night President Bush said it is more dangerous than ever, Americans just want to hear the truth.

They want leadership equal to our soldiers' sacrifice, and they know we can't win if our leaders can't even agree on the facts. This is a time for leadership, and a time for responsible answers to difficult problems.

Yesterday, I laid out a 9 point plan to get it right in Iraq. Here are 3 steps the President can take this weekend to start getting it right in Iraq and ensure greater security for our troops.

1) The President heads to Europe this weekend. He needs to bring home more commitments from our allies to shore up Iraq's borders, invest more in reconstruction and do more training of Iraqi troops. A secure and stable Iraq is in the best interest of every nation across Europe and the Middle East.

2) Send a message across the Middle East that Iraq's neighbor countries must do more to stop the rise of terrorism in Iraq. We need countries like Saudi Arabia to keep their commitment to help pay for reconstruction efforts in Iraq so the Iraqi people get electricity, water and better roads.

We also need help from Iraq's neighbors in shoring up the borders so foreign fighters and terrorists can't get in and can't get out. The President needs to take his tough message to the region and enlist support for our mission. The best way to stop the growth of terrorism is by enlisting more Arab allies.

3) Truly honor our troops' sacrifices in Iraq by immediately covering the one billion dollar shortfall in funding for veterans care this year here at home and increasing funding for armor and necessary supplies for our troops over in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Senator Byrd, Senator Murray, I and others have an amendment pending right now to address the critical funding shortage for veterans. The administration could send a powerful message about sacrifice and national unity if they act now to address this shortfall for the VA.

We need more than just words to get it right in Iraq. We need actions and focus and leadership. We saw what happened after 9/11, in the mountains of Tora Bora, when the administration took its eyes off the ball when it came to hunting down and capturing Osama Bin Laden. We can't afford to let the same thing happen in Iraq.

Our troops are depending on us and we can't let them down. It's time to bring the country together to get it right. No more excuses, no more spin, and no more dividing the country on partisan lines.

Americans have the resolve - we need action from the administration.
