Have you seen this man?

Democratic News

Dear Automat,

Tom DeLay Case File

Click here to read our full case file on Tom DeLay!

Meet Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX), the man Republicans have chosen as their Majority Leader in the House of Representatives.

Tom DeLay is at the center of a bewildering array of investigations into corruption, abuse of power, and ethics violations.

As the courts and committees investigate DeLay's misdeeds and hand down indictments, keeping track of all the scandals can be a full-time job. So we thought it would helpful to offer folks a quick and easy guide:

http://www.democrats.org/delaycasefile

People need to get to know Tom DeLay. He personifies the kind of government we're getting from Republicans -- corrupt, power-hungry, and out of touch.

They also need to know that his Republican colleagues in the House have been complicit in his pattern of sleaze. They even changed the ethics rules to protect him, and packed the Ethics Committee with a bunch of DeLay cronies for good measure.

Spread the Word

It is vital that you help us spread the word about Tom DeLay. The more people who know about his record, the more pressure he'll face. Forward this message to your friends or use this handy tool:

http://www.democrats.org/spreadtheword

Even conservative commentators and editorial boards see the writing on the wall -- they have been weighing in against DeLay's misdeeds and shaming his fellow Republicans for supporting him. But House Republicans don't care -- his money for influence machine and his power-hungry crusades have become standard practice for the GOP.

The DeLay boat is sinking. And it's taking the entire Republican Party with it.

Thank you for making sure every American knows it.

Republican Power Grab

The fight for 2006 begins today

Dear Friend,

Democrats in Congress are in a battle for the very soul of our nation with Republicans whose arrogance and abuse of power have made a mockery of the US House of Representatives. As House Democratic Leader, I should know.

We must ask ourselves, do we want to adopt corruption, indifference to suffering, and contempt for democracy as American values? Will we allow the progress America has made over the past five decades under Democratic leadership to be erased in a few short years by an extreme right-wing Congress run amuck?

The Republicans in the House of Representatives, Senate, and White House are awash in scandals involving everything from bribery and intimidation on the House floor to vicious attacks on America's most vulnerable. Are these the "moral values" that the Republicans like to crow about?

They are not my moral values.

The 2006 elections are closer than you think. At this very moment, the stage is being set and it is vital that the DCCC have the funding it needs to fight back against the onslaught of Republican propaganda and funny money. We must be able to put the Republicans on the defensive where they belong.

By contributing to the DCCC today you're sending a message that the American people will not stand by as Republicans try to turn back the clock on all that we have accomplished as a nation.

https://secure.dccc.org/win/default.aspx?id=myvalues

The Republicans' arrogance and abuse of power has risen to new heights in this 109th Congress. Never before has the institution of the House of Representatives - which is suppose to represent all of the American people - been used so cynically by one party to protect their own power. We need to put them back in their place, and with your help, we will.

For just a few examples of Republicans' abuse of power...

The Assault on Social Security. Social Security is the most popular, most successful government program in history, and now the Republicans are attempting to turn this New Deal program into a raw deal that would reduce benefits by up to 40% while adding trillions to the debt. A new study from President Bush's own Yale University informs us that 71% of recipients would likely lose out through privatization, and yet Republicans charge on without a care.

A Reverse Robin Hood Budget. President Bush and House Republicans are pushing a budget that will shortchange housing, education, and veterans while heaping even more tax cuts on the extremely wealthy and handing out the few sacred preserved lands that belong to all of us as prizes to their political contributors in the oil industry. Nowhere is our government's morality tested more starkly than in the hard numbers of the federal budget, and this year's proposal fails this test miserably.

https://secure.dccc.org/win/default.aspx?id=myvalues

The Gutting of Medicaid. Bush and House Republicans have targeted the social program providing the most basic health care to struggling Americans, with a staggering $40 billion cut that will have repercussions for virtually every state in the union. The Republicans hope to dismantle our great social contracts, destroy our very moral fabric, and make America into a country that leaves its most vulnerable destitute - even as tax giveaways for the super rich are given the highest priority.

Leading an Unethical Government. Judging by the steady stream of ethical scandals revolving around Republican House Leader Tom DeLay, involving everything from bribes and intimidation on the House floor to junkets paid for with millions in extorted casino money, ethics must somehow be the opposite of moral values. This comes after three separate ethical condemnations last year and the looming threat of indictment for shady corporate fundraising in Texas. But rather than curtail his corruption or humble himself, Tom DeLay along with his loyal rubberstamps in Congress have simply rigged the ethics rules to protect him and purged from the ethics committee the Chairman, Members and staff who held him accountable last year. The American people do not conduct their lives in an ethical vacuum and our Representatives should not either.

These are not representative of my moral values and I am sure they aren't yours. In fact, they're an affront to the values of tens of millions of Americans who believe their government should work for all-not just the well connected and the very wealthy. We are for progress, we are for REAL reform, and we will not tolerate attempts to turn back the clock on our beloved country and our democracy.

In the last Congress, House Republicans became the most arrogant, unethical and corrupt majority in modern Congressional history. Tragically, this profoundly immoral behavior is continuing without a pause in the first few months of this Congress.

Please Support our Fight for a Democratic Majority Today:

https://secure.dccc.org/win/default.aspx?id=myvalues

Thank you so much, and I look forward to fighting along side you.

Sincerely,

Nancy Pelosi
House Democratic Leader

Dear Friend,

I know -- it's only March 2005, but the 2006 Senate races are already starting to heat up!  With the Senate in its Easter recess this week, now is the perfect time to begin planning our strategy to take back Congress -- and our country.

PAC for a Change is going to be on the frontlines of the '06 fight, from now through Election Day.  The right-wing Republicans have a record of failure that they can't hide from, and we're going to hold them accountable.

We need to work together -- starting right now -- to fight hard for progressive candidates across America.  Please contribute to PAC for a Change today!

33 Senate seats are up in 2006 -- 18 of those are currently held by Democrats (including Independent Jim Jeffords of Vermont) and only 15 of those are held by Republicans.  Further, two good Democratic Senators, my friends Paul Sarbanes from Maryland and Mark Dayton from Minnesota, are retiring in 2006 -- leaving 2 open Democratic seats to defend, versus only one open seat for the Republicans.

So we've got our work cut out for us in having to defend more total Senate seats than the Republicans, and having to defend more open seats as well.

But, even if some of the numbers aren't in our favor, we have the issues squarely on our side.  We won't let the Republicans avoid the consequences for all of the damage they've done:

  • For their reckless economic policy that has rung up record deficits, slashed education and health care programs for our families, rewarded the wealthiest Americans at the expense of the poor, and cost our country hundreds of thousand of jobs

  • For their irresponsible environmental policy that pollutes our air, dirties our water, and threatens our most pristine wilderness areas

  • For their misguided foreign policy that has alienated our allies, cost us billions of dollars, and led to the injuries and deaths of thousands of our soldiers, as well as tens of thousands of innocent people around the world -- while Osama bin Laden is still on the run

Please support PAC for a Change today!

You are the key to giving me the resources we need to change the Senate.  I want to contribute directly to those progressive candidates who understand that the things that make our country great are under attack and who know that unless we pick up seats, our ability to stop the Karl Rove destruction machine will be further weakened.

With your help, I will make sure that Americans know the truth, telling people across the country that while the ideologues play politics with a poor woman's life, they do absolutely NOTHING for millions of Americans who are in desperate need of health care, all the while giving daily gifts to the large pharmaceutical companies and HMOs.

I am asking you from the bottom of my heart to contribute today to PAC for a Change so we can continue our fight for this country.

When I stood up to Condoleezza Rice to hold her accountable for her past actions, the right-wing extremists tried everything they could to demean me.  When I stopped the Presidential vote count for a few hours to shed light on the serious problems in Ohio, they said I was on the fringe, even though these Election Day shenanigans were well documented.  When I continue to call the war in Iraq a disaster, they try to isolate me.

Well, you can make a statement that you stand with me by contributing to my PAC today and getting a few others to do the same.  It doesn't have to be much, but if lots of you respond to this, it will make it possible for us to help in a big way!

Please contribute $25, $100, $500, or more to PAC for a Change today!

All of this work will make a huge difference next November -- but we have to start now.  Thank you so much for all of your support.  I can't do it without you.

In Friendship,

Barbara Boxer

Join our Democratic March Madness Pool!

Dear Friend,

It’s that time of year! Across the country fans are going wild as 64 college basketball teams battle it out in the NCAA Tournament for spots in the Sweet 16, the Elite 8, and the Final Four.

Well, we’ve got a little pool of our own going. Throughout the rest of the month we will be holding our own March Madness tournament with the Elitist Eight - the worst of the vulnerable Republicans - and we are asking you to get in on the action!

http://www.democraticaction.org/madness/index.php

Will Tom DeLay be able to work the refs to his advantage? Will Katherine Harris, the conference-leader in steals, be able to pilfer her way to the finals? Or will one of the faux moderates make it through on their ability to play both sides of the ball?

http://www.democraticaction.org/madness/index.php

Whoever you vote as the winner will receive the prestigious prize of a prominent web video ad on their local paper’s website taking them to task for their record and noting their honor as the most elitist of the Elitist 8. Here’s how it works:

  • You pick your "favorite" GOP Member in each Regional Match.
  • Each week, we’ll narrow down the field by half, leading to the “fat cat” four and then the final grudge match.
  • We’ll buy whoever “wins” a nice juicy ad in their hometown, telling their constituents exactly what they’ve been up to behind their backs.

Be warned, the competition is stiff. Here are your Elitist Eight:

  • Tom DeLay (TX-22)
  • Katherine Harris (FL-13)
  • Marilyn Musgrave (CO-04)
  • Chris Chocola (IN-02)
  • Nancy Johnson (CT-04)
  • Chris Shays (CT-02)
  • Heather Wilson (NM-01)
  • Charles Taylor (NC-11)

Get the low down on each of them, then join the pool!

    Kids First Campaign Heats Up

    JohnKerry.com
    Listen to Calls

    Dear Supporter,

In the next 30 days, we've got to persuade the U.S. Senate to take the next critical step in winning health care coverage for every American child.

Today, I am joining leaders from a wide range of organizations representing millions of American families in issuing a simple call to action. If we want our Kids First Act to move forward, we need hearings scheduled in the Senate Finance Committee. So our powerful coalition is kicking off a month-long campaign to press for a firm date this spring for hearings on our Kids First Act.

Millions of families wake up every day to the stark reality of knowing their children have no health insurance. Surely, the Senate can wake up one day this spring and devote a few hours to hearing their stories.

Our Kids First momentum is building every day. Organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the March of Dimes, Every Child Matters, and the AFL-CIO have endorsed our Kids First Act. And over 500,000 people have signed on as citizen co-sponsors of our bill. The best way to make Washington listen is to put that total over one million in the next 30 days.

If you haven't signed already, please do so now. And urge others who care about kids to do the same.

    http://www.johnkerry.com/kidsfirst

Getting hearings scheduled is so important. Committee hearings separate proposals that have a chance of becoming law from those that aren't ever going to see the light of day. They provide an opportunity for Congress to receive expert testimony on the importance of a bill and provide an opportunity to get vital information into the public record.

Senator Charles Grassley, chair of the Senate Finance Committee, has been supportive of children's initiatives in the past. We need him to act now by setting a firm date for the hearings America's children need and deserve.

We know how powerful people's stories can be. Thousands have called our Kids First phone lines to give voice to their values. With moving words and sometimes painful stories, they have made it clear that America must move forward to provide health insurance to every child.

I want you to hear some of the messages yourself. Click on our Kids First map and listen to what people from your state have to say.

    http://www.johnkerry.com/map

There are those in Washington who want to ignore those voices and hide from the fact that children without health care translates into needless pain and suffering for millions of American families. But we won't let uninsured children be ignored any longer. We've got to put health care for our children at the top of our national agenda. It won't be easy, but we will never rest until we find a way to make sure America puts Kids First.

This month, it's all about keeping the pressure on for hearings. When members of Congress go back for visits in their home states, we need to make sure they hear a forceful demand for action on the Kids First Act - especially members of the Senate Finance Committee. Thanks for helping keep the pressure on.

    Sincerely,

    John Kerry

P.S. Keep your eyes open for updates on this campaign and ways that you can get involved during the congressional recess. Together, we'll make Washington listen.

    51, 49 and 260,000

    JohnKerry.com

    Dear Supporter,

Yesterday, we saw a relentless Republican attack on one of our most treasured natural wonders sneak through the Senate on a 51 to 49 vote. But, we also saw more than 260,000 Americans act in less than 24 hours to add their names to our Citizens' Roll Call in favor of protecting the Arctic Refuge.

It was the first time ever that I or anyone else could stand on the Senate floor and announce that, in a day's time, a quarter of a million Americans had gone online to express their passionate support for a given course of action.

That awesome display of grassroots power rattled our opponents. They even railed against my e-mail message on the Senate floor and entered its text into the Senate record. So, think of it this way. The Republican leaders of the Senate have 51 reasons to celebrate today, but you and I have 260,000 reasons to do the same.

If we keep working together - committed pro-environment Senators and a powerful grassroots movement all pulling in the same direction - we can still stop the plan for drilling in the Arctic from making it the rest of the way through Congress. And we can win the larger battle over two very different visions of America's energy future.

George W. Bush and the Washington Republicans have a plan to sell off our public lands to powerful special interests. As a result of their ruthless drive to undermine America's most beautiful natural treasures, the oil rigs are closer to the Arctic Refuge than they have ever been. But, the Bush administration's own scientists and economists admit that the Republicans' plan will not make us less dependent on foreign oil and will not lower prices at the pump. We have to put America's energy future in the hands of Americans - by inventing our way to real energy independence and having energy sources that create jobs and lower prices.

With your help, we will continue to wholeheartedly resist their special interest-funded partisan agenda. And, if we act with the same energy and determination as we have on this critical Arctic Refuge vote, sooner than later, our power and commitment will carry the day. I know you will be with me every step of the way and I thank you for the passion and energy that you bring to our work together.

    Sincerely,

    John Kerry

P.S. I told you that more than a quarter of a million people signed our Citizens' Roll Call in the first 24 hours after we launched it. Actually the news is even more impressive. As of this moment, there are over 400,000 signers to our Roll Call, including tens of thousands who signed after the vote to express their determination to keep fighting. Let's keep working.

    The fight for ANWR continues...

Tell the big oil companies to stay out of ANWR!

    Dear Friend,

Today, my heart is heavy.  By just two votes, we came up short in our effort to prevent oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, home to over 150 wildlife species.  I offer my heartfelt thanks to the over 29,000 of you who joined with me and signed my petition to Senate Republican Leader Bill Frist, demonstrating our strong opposition to this disastrous policy.

In the end, over 90% of Senate Democrats voted to stop this madness -- we just didn't have the votes to overcome the Republican majority in the Senate.

But I want you to know that I won't give up in our fight to stop the drilling.  And neither should you.  I'm going to use every legislative tool at my disposal to reverse this vote and prevent this terrible policy from going into effect.  But we can do more -- today.

I'm planning to organize a consumer boycott of any oil company that decides to drill in this pristine Alaskan wilderness area.  If, through our pocketbooks, we can convince these companies to do the right thing, we can still save the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from the destruction that would be wrought by the oil drilling rigs.

Send an email to the CEOs of ExxonMobil, BP, ConocoPhillips, Royal Dutch/Shell, and ChevronTexaco now and tell them to stay out of ANWR!

And then invite everyone you know to join us.

This battle is not over -- not by a long shot.

    In Friendship,

    Mr. James Mulva, ConocoPhillips CEO
Mr. Jeroen van der Veer, Shell CEO
    Mr. John Browne, BP CEO
    Mr. Lee Raymond, ExxonMobil CEO

    Below is the sample letter:

Subject: Stay Out of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge!

Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],

As you know, current legislation making its way through Congress would open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling.

I am writing to urge your company to publicly pledge that you will not drill in ANWR.

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is a God-given gift of pristine wilderness, first set aside by President Dwight Eisenhower more than 40 years ago, and we have a responsibility to preserve it. ANWR is home to more than 150 wildlife species, including caribou, polar bears, musk oxen, and millions of migratory birds.

The American people will not stand idly by and allow this wilderness area to be defiled.

If your company decides to drill in ANWR, we will launch a boycott of your products, and the products of your subsidiaries. And I know that millions of Americans will join us.

I urge you make a public pledge that you will not drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge -- or face a boycott of your products.

Thank you for your consideration of this critically important matter.

    Sincerely,
