Corruption, Cronyism and Incompetence

Dear Friend,

At midnight tonight, the Democrats and Republicans will put their cards on the table when we report our 3rd Quarter fundraising. The Republicans are betting that they can survive their latest troubles by covering their tracks with deceptive attacks on the airwaves, paid for by their special interest cronies.

But today is every Democrat's chance to show them that their tainted money will not save them this time. The DCCC needs to raise another $47,000 by midnight tonight to hit our goal and put the Republicans on notice that their days of power are coming to an end.

You have already been one of our most active supporters - thank you. Today, I'm asking you to take an additional step, the most important thing you can do right now is help us show our strength.

Make a secure, online contribution of $35, $50, or more to the DCCC. Your gift will be DOUBLED and help provide the money we urgently need to end the GOP's reign of corruption.

President Bush has exploited and squandered the trust of the American people, and his approval ratings are reminiscent of Nixon's during his darkest days. Republicans in Washington D.C. are plagued by a culture of corruption. An ethical cloud hangs over the Capitol. The House Republican Leader has been indicted, the Senate Republican Leader is under investigation, the President's chief political adviser is under investigation, the White House's chief procurement officer was arrested last week, and the web that entangles the Republicans in the House, the Senate, and in the White House, Jack Abramoff, has been investigated and indicted. This culture of corruption must stop.

Together, America can do better.

I urge you to make a secure, DOUBLED online contribution of $35, $50, or more to the DCCC today.

The Republican agenda has left Americans behind. It is time for a new chapter in our nation's history, one in which we can again trust that our government is working for the people. Our efforts together will culminate in a drastic change in the balance of power in America.

Republicans are counting on their special interest millions and I'm counting on you.

I urge you to make a secure, DOUBLED online contribution of $35, $50, or more to the DCCC today.

Tonight is your last chance before the cards go down. Republicans are corrupt. They have created a culture of corruption in Washington, D.C. It is about cronyism. It is about favoritism to their friends in contracting, and it is about incompetence. And that is from the Capitol to the White House. Together, we will stand up to the culture of corruption this leadership has created. We will defeat President Bush, Karl Rove, and Tom DeLay, and a Democratic House will remind them of the meaning of accountability.

Thank you for all you've done. I would not keep asking if this was not so important.

Nancy Pelosi
House Democratic Leader

P.S. America cannot afford to allow George W. Bush to enact his extreme agenda, aided and abetted by a right-wing Republican Congress. We need a Democratic Majority. We cannot afford to wait. Please support the DCCC today and your gift will be doubled!

Republican Leader Tom DeLay indicted for conspiracy

Dear automat,

House Republican Leader Tom DeLay and two associates were indicted today for criminal conspiracy.

Specifically, the charge is conspiracy to violate campaign finance laws. The indictment is another stark reminder that Republicans have a lucrative money-for-influence machine that will do anything -- including breaking the law -- to funnel corporate and special interest money into their party in huge amounts.

People ask what the difference is between the two parties, and this indictment gives one clear answer.

Republicans are committed to pushing the legal limits to collect checks from special interests who want to use government for their own narrow purposes. Democrats are committed to funding our party with contributions from ordinary Americans so that when we take power, the government will represent the people.

You can make your personal commitment to changing the culture of corruption by getting your Democracy Bond -- a monthly commitment to contribute to the Democratic Party:

http://www.democrats.org/democracybonds

The Republican Party raises $10 million a month in huge checks from special interests who know they will get a return on their investment in the form of government giveaways and special privileges.

Even though committed small donors have revolutionized the way campaigns and organizations on our side raise money, the fact is that the Republican National Committee raises twice as much as the Democratic National Committee.

We will never compete with the money Republicans like DeLay can collect through conspiracy and corruption. That's why every single committed Democrat needs to make the Democracy Bond commitment:

http://www.democrats.org/democracybonds

The only way we will close the gap will be with a million people giving $20 a month.

A million people sounds like a lot -- and it is. But tens of millions of us already put so much of ourselves into the political process -- talking to friends, knocking on doors for candidates, writing letters to the editor of our local papers, and making contributions from time to time.

But we will only create lasting change if that sense of obligation and responsibility becomes a regular part of our lives.

That's the idea behind Democracy Bonds. We are building a community of people committed to a stable, healthy Democratic Party not just for this month or even this election cycle, but for the next generation. Join the Democracy Bond community now:

http://www.democrats.org/democracybonds

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Governor Dean directed us to halt fundraising and divert staff resources to the relief effort. He asked you to contribute to the Red Cross, and staff members were deployed to the Gulf region.

The 24,819 Democracy Bond holders who provide financial stability for our party through their monthly contributions made that possible.

I cannot overstate how important the Democracy Bonds program is to the future of our party. This community of ordinary Americans committed to contributing whatever they can afford defines who we are as a party. If you haven't yet, please join now:

http://www.democrats.org/democracybonds

The indictment of Tom DeLay is just the tip of the iceberg.

This isn't just about clean campaign financing -- it's about who controls our government. This culture of corruption has dangerous consequences -- the Republican administration has shown us all too clearly what happens when political cronies occupy critical positions of power.

It's time for ordinary people -- whose money is wasted and whose safety is jeopardized by corruption -- to stand up and say, "Enough."

Let's stand together.

Thank you,
Tom McMahon

DeLay Indicted: The 'Republican Revolution' Is Over

Dear Friend,

Today Tom DeLay's House of Scandal took a wrecking ball as he was indicted in Texas for - what else - criminal conspiracy related to illegal corporate fundraising.

Tom DeLay, the most powerful Republican the House has ever seen, is under indictment. Senate Leader Bill Frist and White House mastermind Karl Rove are likewise mired in federal investigations.

But Tom DeLay and Bill Frist are not alone in their shady style of governing - it is a systemic problem in the Republican Party that goes far beyond these two men. Tom DeLay's hardnosed influence peddling has permeated the Republican money machine, from the top strategists and committees to the lowliest backbenchers in the Congress. This is the Party that is deciding the fate of the country we love. We cannot allow it to continue.

If you contribute $35, $50, or more to the DCCC today, your contribution will be DOUBLED!

Nothing could have highlighted better the reasons for the DCCC's Campaign for Change. The poetic justice of DeLay being indicted on the very anniversary of the self-righteous Contract with America will go down in history as one of the most spectacular falls in American politics, and the closing chapter in the so-called "Republican Revolution."

The days of selling out the American people to big oil and the pharmaceutical industry must end. It is time for a new day, a wholesale change in the House of Representatives. America need not waste its time, resources, and treasure on this culture of corruption any longer.

If you contribute $35, $50, or more to the DCCC today, your contribution will be DOUBLED!

The DCCC is focused on ousting Tom DeLay and his cronies. We told you about Tom DeLay's scandals and super-lobbyist Jack Abramoff, known as "Director of Travel for DeLay Inc." We launched our House of Scandal website, and we have been relentless in exposing every Member of Congress tied to DeLay. We are not going to rest.

We must put Democrats in the majority to put an end to this corruption once and for all. A strong showing at the end of the quarter will prove to the Republicans that we have the resources to hold them accountable. Make your contribution today and I will personally see to it that every dollar goes to exposing Republicans for their betrayal of America's trust:

If you contribute $35, $50, or more to the DCCC today, your contribution will be DOUBLED!

Under House rules, Tom DeLay DOES NOT have to resign as a Member of Congress. Under the rules of the GOP conference, he ONLY has to step down from his leadership post while under indictment.

This means it is up to us -- you, me and the DCCC -- to make sure Tom DeLay does not keep his seat. We need to defeat him and his cronies in 2006.

With the indictment of DeLay, the "Republican Revolution" and their precious "Contract with America" are exposed as frauds. The whole Republican system of pay-to-play politics and lobbyist-driven legislating that DeLay put into place, benefiting the special interests at the expense of average families and our country. Until that system is dismantled and the "people's House" is returned to the people, Congress will not address the challenges and concerns facing families across our nation.

We need to bring a permanent end to DeLay's House of Scandal. We need leadership that will work for the American people and not the special interests like the oil and gas industries and the big drug and insurance companies.

We will work with you to take the Democratic message into every corner of the country, and make sure Republicans' constituents know that their representatives have been serving the interests of an indicted, entrenched influence-peddler instead of their own.

The Republican Party has betrayed the trust of the American people, and it is time that they are thrown out. It's our job to make that happen, and we will with your help.

Over the next year, we'll need your input and your action; today we need your help to make our fundraising goal and show the Republicans their time is over:

If you contribute $35, $50, or more to the DCCC today, your contribution will be DOUBLED!

You'll hear much, much more from us soon. This is only the beginning.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

John Lapp
Executive Director, DCCC

Four candidates, your choice

JohnKerry.com
Contribute Today

Dear Friend,

It is now absolutely clear that the 2006 elections will represent a fundamental choice between those who want to stay the course President Bush has set - and those who want to move America forward in a more promising direction.

By acting now, you can provide essential momentum to Democratic candidates in the closest, most critical contests. But, you have to act before midnight Friday.

The September 30th FEC reporting deadline will give key Democratic Senate candidates a unique opportunity to demonstrate the strength of their campaigns. Please act now to propel one or more of these candidates toward victory.

Make a contribution to one or more of these key races before the end of quarter deadline.

Senator Robert C. Byrd (D-West Virginia)

There are two ways to incur the wrath of the Bush administration. One is to insist that the administration abide by the Constitution. The other is to ask tough questions about Bush policies. Senator Robert C. Byrd has done both as one of the Senate's most powerful and authoritative voices. As a result, the Republican Party political machine would like nothing better than to defeat him next November. Senator Byrd is an indispensable leader in the U.S. Senate. He has fought hard for the people of West Virginia and for the principles at the heart of our democracy. At a time in our nation's history when the executive branch is trying to expand its authority and one political party controls two branches of government, Senator Byrd has stood up for the Constitution and the Founding Fathers' vision of separation of powers. Now, it's time for us to stand up for him. CONTRIBUTE

Senator Bill Nelson (D-Florida)

Remember Katherine Harris and the role she played in the 2000 Florida vote fiasco? Well, she's one of the GOP candidates who would like nothing better than to drive Senator Bill Nelson out of office. So, we have two priorities in this Senate race - making sure a strong Democratic Senator gets re-elected - and making certain a Republican candidate doesn't use her role in disrupting the democratic process as a stepping stone to higher office.

You can help put Florida in the winning Democratic column by providing immediate support to Senator Nelson. Whether it's stopping oil drilling off Florida's coast, preserving Social Security, or protecting our personal privacy from the intrusion of government, Bill Nelson is fighting for Florida. He has a long record of taking on powerful interests - from insurance companies to oil companies to the big banks, and he is a strong advocate for the protection of voters' rights in Florida and around the nation. He's a tough senator heading into a tough campaign and he needs your help now. CONTRIBUTE

Claire McCaskill (Missouri challenger)

Claire McCaskill is challenging incumbent Republican Jim Talent to re-capture the seat that was narrowly lost during a special election in 2002, and the race is currently deadlocked. Her victory could help narrow the GOP's advantage and add another powerful Democratic female voice to the Senate. She's already won statewide in Missouri - twice! Claire has deep rural roots and a genuine understanding of the challenges facing Missouri families. She's been a legislator, a prosecutor and a State Auditor and, in the words of the Kansas City Star, she has been "exceptional in every office she's held." [Editorial Board, 10/24/04] Claire has promised voters that if they send her to Washington she will clean up the mess that Republicans have created for working families and help make common sense the order of the day. You can help put this exceptional leader on the road to victory by acting right now. CONTRIBUTE

Jim Pederson (Arizona challenger)

Jim Pederson is challenging Republican incumbent Senator Jon Kyl. Senator Kyl has been Example A of a strict conservative who continues to put partisan politics ahead of Arizona families. The Arizona tradition is one of independence, of putting the well-being of people ahead of party, ahead of ideology, ahead of big campaign money, and Jim Pederson will make sure that he brings this tradition with him to Washington. As one of the leading Senate challengers in the country, Jim is running a strong campaign built around common sense solutions to immigration reform, increased national security, and greater access to quality education and health care. Your help now can give this impressive Senate challenger a boost at a critical moment in the campaign. CONTRIBUTE

Make a contribution to one or more of these key races before the end of quarter deadline.

Keeping America's Promise, the political action committee that I helped found, is pulling out all the stops for these four essential Senate candidates. Give to one of them - or better still, donate to all four. But, whatever you do, act now.

Don't hesitate for a moment. With the deadline fast approaching, it's vitally important that you participate right now.

Sincerely,

John Kerry

Republicans: Contract Breached

Dear Friend,

Eleven years ago today, Newt Gingrich and Tom DeLay rode to power on the infamous Contract with America, railing against "special interests" and "the cycle of scandal and disgrace." Today is the anniversary of that political stunt, and their "Contract" lies in shreds, a testament to nothing but the hypocrisy and empty promises at the core of Republican government.

Instead of delivering on promises of accountability and reform, they have turned record surpluses into record deficits, turned control of Congress over to special interests like Big Oil and the Big Drug Companies, and turned their backs on hardworking Americans who are struggling with the soaring costs of gasoline, health insurance, tuition, and prescription drugs.

The 2006 elections cannot be won today, but they can be lost. You have already done so much to support the DCCC, but I need you to take the next step. September 30th is a crucial fundraising deadline and the DCCC needs to meet its fundraising goals to compete with the Republican money machine. Today, the most important action I can ask you to take is to make a contribution to the DCCC.

If you contribute $35, $50, or more to the DCCC today, your contribution will be DOUBLED!

My fellow House Democrats and I are so committed to change in 2006 that we are matching every dollar you give to make sure the DCCC meets its fundraising goals to remain competitive.

In 1994, the Republicans crowed about "restoring the bonds of trust between the people and their elected representatives." Since then, they have taken the trust America placed in them and ruthlessly exploited it. Karl Rove and Republican leaders Bill Frist and Tom DeLay are all mired in legal troubles. The Republicans' attacks on our most cherished values and resources have been rooted in outrageously deceptive rhetoric, and we have not heard a candid word on Iraq from the White House since the war began.

In the press conference announcing the contract, Newt Gingrich and Tom DeLay said "If we break this contract, throw us out." More than a decade later, instead of delivering on their promises, the Republican majority has delivered a bloated federal budget deficit, an out-of-touch leadership, and a complete lack of accountability.

Let's call Republicans on their pledge: It is time to throw the Republican leadership out of office and the best way to do this is to make a contribution to the DCCC now.

Contribute $35, $50, or more to the DCCC today and your contribution will be DOUBLED by House Democrats!

Working Americans have never fit into the Bush Administration's plans. Now we see the Republican Congress trying to use Hurricane Katrina to justify scaling back social contracts such as Medicare and Medicaid at a time when they are needed the most - even as they push to extend the tax cuts for the oil industry and richest among us.

Recent polls consistently show that President Bush's leadership and the Republican rhetoric is ringing hollow with the American public. Americans say they are tired of Republican hypocrisy and that they say they want a Democratic Congress. And we will give it to them. You can help make it happen with a contribution today.

Contribute $35, $50, or more to the DCCC today and your contribution will be DOUBLED by House Democrats!

While Democrats have demonstrated our commitment to the sense of community and the common good that has made our country and our society great, Republicans have waged an all-out assault on those values.

While Democrats have fought to help those struggling in the Bush economy, Republicans have fought for devastating cuts in every aspect of our safety net and left hard working Americans behind at every turn.

Public opinion shows that Democrats leadership is favored, and we need to sustain this momentum. Help the DCCC finish the quarter on the offensive, and House Members will double your impact by matching your contribution dollar for dollar.

Contribute $35, $50, or more to the DCCC today and your contribution will be DOUBLED by House Democrats!

You stand with us time and time again, I hope you can take the next step and make a contribution today. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Nancy Pelosi
House Democratic Leader

Why bother to fight Roberts?

Dear automat,

The Bush Adminstration refused to come clean about John Roberts's record and rejected over 100,000 requests for key documents. You can read the letter from the Department of Justice.
Adminstration stonewalling and Roberts's silence on key issues leave too many unanswered questions. Don't be afraid to speak out -- tell your local newspaper that America's highest court deserves a better process and a better nominee.

A few weeks ago more than 100,000 of us filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for key documents on Supreme Court nominee John Roberts. This week, just before the legal deadline for a response, the Justice Department formally brushed aside the public interest and refused to release the documents.

Senate Democrats waited for the Bush Administration to come clean about Roberts's record -- the administration chose not to. During the hearings, they asked Roberts serious, precise questions about his record and his views -- but Roberts dodged question after question.

Our Senate Leader, Harry Reid, is right: there are simply too many questions left unanswered. John Roberts, and the sham process that has accompanied his nomination, does not deserve our support.

But it is obvious that the Republican-controlled Senate will confirm John Roberts. Some people even say that it's useless for us to speak out against him. They say we're wasting our time.

But how will we win any battle if we don't stand up for what we believe and speak the truth? More importantly, how will Americans know what to expect from a Democratic Congress and Democratic president if we don't fight for our values at every opportunity?

Democrats can disagree with Democrats in good faith -- and many do on this issue. But when political calculations silence our conscience, we have abandoned our true values. We cannot let that happen.

Our party must speak plainly and fight for the values of equality, opportunity and security that bring our party -- and the vast majority of Americans -- together.

And that's exactly what we're going to do.

If you want to take a stand in your community, you can start by writing a letter to the editor of your local paper about why John Roberts is the wrong man at the wrong time. Nearly 75,000 letters have already gone to newspapers.

Don't be afraid to fight:

Thank you.
