12 hours to turn the tide

Dear Friend,

What you do in the next 12 hours could well determine whether we celebrate on November 7.

Nothing would do more to change Washington and change the direction of our country than the election of a Democratic majority in the Senate. We can get halfway there if we help elect three new Democratic Senators in Tennessee, Ohio and Minnesota. But we can't do it without your help!

Act before the deadline tonight.

Reject Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist's failed leadership by replacing him with Harold Ford Jr. in Tennessee. Tell Mike DeWine that Ohio deserves better than a Bush rubber stamp, and help Sherrod Brown defeat this Republican incumbent. Tell Mark Kennedy in Minnesota that voting with Bush 97% of the time is wrong, and give Amy Klobuchar the resources she needs to keep Minnesota Democratic.

Harold Ford, Sherrod Brown, and Amy Klobuchar need your immediate support. Already this week, we've raised tens of thousands of dollars for these candidates. Now, we need to finish strong, right up to the midnight deadline tonight.

Act before the deadline tonight.

Believe me, the Republicans are using these next 12 hours to shore up their candidates and to raise funds to launch cynical, negative Swift Boat-style attacks designed to distract voters from Republican incompetence, corruption, and disarray - take my word for it, I've seen this movie before.

With falling poll numbers and the mess in Washington getting dirtier each day, we know what's going to happen -- things are going to get ugly early. We've got to let our candidates know that we will never let them face those kinds of attacks alone and that together we can change the balance of power in the U.S. Senate.

Strong candidates supported by determined grassroots support. That's the formula for victory in 2006. Let's set three stunning Senate victories in motion right now.

Sincerely,

John Kerry

P.S. Please help us spread the word in these last critical 12 hours. Pass this email on to five friends and encourage them to support these great new Democrats as well. Together we can take this important step toward winning back the Senate.

Asking for your time, not your dollars

Dear automat,

Are you ready to make history?

Thanks to the overwhelming support from thousands of Democrats, who donated to get the literature for the canvass printed and shipped, we're on schedule and gearing up for the unprecedented Neighbor-to-Neighbor Organizing Day on April 29th.

On that Saturday, thousands of volunteers will recruit hundreds of thousands more Americans committed to changing the status quo this year during door-knocking events in communities across America.

Democrats have a clear vision for America, and we're going to get the word out by making personal contact with our neighbors. And along the way we will build new relationships among volunteers on the ground, a network that will have an impact beyond a single day.

Whether you've never volunteered or you're a seasoned door-knocking veteran, it is crucial that you take part in this historic organizing push.

Please RSVP for an event near you:

http://www.democrats.org/50statecanvass/find

In many states, Democratic Party staff on the ground have already put together staging areas for massive voter contact events on the 29th. Thanks to donations from people like you, hundreds of thousands of pieces of literature are being printed and shipping in bulk to those locations right now.

If there isn't an event near you, don't worry. Some state parties will have canvassing events on alternate dates, or have other important events planned for that weekend.

You can still plan your own canvass in your community. Our online tool makes the planning process easy, and if you create your event before April 10th, we will get doorhangers to you in time for your canvass on the 29th.

You can create your own event here:

http://www.democrats.org/50statecanvass/create

Whether you're attending an event or hosting your own, we have also put together materials on the web to help you make your canvass as effective as possible.

The online package includes tips on canvassing, a suggested script for when you get to the door, and the doorhanger itself in various formats for you to print extras on your own.

Here is the online resource center:

Two-thirds of Americans reject this president and the Republican leadership -- and they are waiting to hear from us.

We are all members of one American community and it's up to us to make sure that our country has a government as good as its people.

Democrats have a big task in November. We will only win if every one of us takes responsibility for the outcome of the election now -- while there is still time to build our operation.

Thank you for being a part of this extraordinary grassroots push.

Critical races, new faces

JohnKerry.com
Contribute

Dear Friend,

Sherrod Brown is one of our best hopes - and Karl Rove's worst nightmare. And, with a critical March 31 deadline approaching, he needs our immediate help so that he can replace Senator Mike DeWine, a full-fledged Bush apologist.

Act before the March 31 deadline.

As you can imagine, the GOP political establishment will pull out all the stops to protect Mike DeWine's Senate seat. They'll pour millions of dollars into the state. So will right-wing groups who are deeply grateful for DeWine's record of serving as a rubber stamp for Bush and the Republican leaders in Congress. DeWine has voted in lock-step with the Bush administration on Iraq, Medicare, and the energy bill, to name a few.

We need to help Sherrod Brown even the odds by rushing grassroots donations to his campaign before a critical midnight deadline this Friday. Act now because we need Sherrod Brown's leadership in the Senate on prescription drugs, health care, and other critical issues.

As a Congressman, he was the chief Democratic sponsor of the bipartisan Children's Health Act of 2000, which expanded research on autism, birth defects, and other child-related diseases. A respected voice in Congress on U.S. trade policy, Sherrod led the bipartisan opposition to last summer's flawed Central American Free Trade Agreement.

Act before the March 31 deadline.

If he can count on our immediate help, Sherrod Brown can make Ohio the site of one of our Party's most critical triumphs in 2006 and send a breath of fresh air to Washington by helping us toward our goal of taking back the Senate. I can tell you this: I am eagerly looking forward to the day when Sherrod Brown and I serve side-by-side in the Senate.

In fact, I feel so strongly about the Ohio Senate race that, all across the country this week, we're alerting members of our grassroots community to his critically important campaign.

Act before the March 31 deadline.

Let me tell you about two other exciting candidates who can join him as new Democratic Senators.

In Minnesota, Amy Klobuchar is working hard - and with great success - to frustrate Karl Rove's dream of turning Minnesota red. Bush, Frist, and a whole parade of GOP figures have come to Minnesota to shore up the campaign of Amy's opponent, a Bush rubber stamp who votes with the President 97% of the time. As Hennepin County prosecutor, Amy has been a strong advocate for women, doubling the number of domestic abuse cases prosecuted in the County. I need Amy with me in the Senate to fight for health care reform, energy independence, tax fairness and economic and international security.

Another leader we need in the Senate is Harold Ford Jr., running in Tennessee. Harold has never been afraid to take tough stands and hold our leaders accountable for policies he believes are failing the American people. He represents a new generation of leadership dedicated to breaking the stranglehold of Middle East oil, making health care more affordable, and building genuine national security at home and in the world. If you have ever wanted to send a message to Bill Frist that you are tired of his failed leadership in Washington and his refusal to stand up to President Bush, there is no better way to do that than by electing a great new Democrat to take Frist's place in the U.S. Senate.

All three of these Senate candidates are running great campaigns, making Rove and the Republicans very nervous, but they need us to help them press forward to victory.

Act before the March 31 deadline.

Sherrod Brown, Amy Klobuchar, and Harold Ford urgently need and deserve your support before the Friday midnight deadline that is fast approaching. If we can elect all three of them, we'll be halfway toward our goal of taking back the Senate in 2006.

I know you'll be there for them. Thanks so much for all you do.

Sincerely,

John Kerry

What do Newt Gingrich and Howard Dean have in common?

Dear automat,

I bet you've never thought that when you open up one of these messages for grassroots Democrats across the country, that among the people also reading them would be Republican and disgraced former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich.

What makes us think he's reading? We don't know for sure (if you have Newt's email address, let us know and we'll check the database), but look at what he said in an interview with Time.com this weekend. Asked about the sorry situation of his own party and the prospect for Democratic gains, he suggested that Democrats could make the case against Republican corruption and incompetence with a single slogan: "Had enough?"

Governor Howard Dean has been saying exactly the same thing for months as he's traveled the country. In fact, hundreds of thousands of Americans are sporting "Enough is Enough -- Vote Democratic!" bumper stickers printed by the DNC. "We've all had enough -- enough of Republican incompetence, arrogance and corruption," Governor Dean wrote in November after Democrats swept gubernatorial races and won historic victories up and down the ballot.

But Newt is wrong about one thing -- a slogan isn't enough to win this election. We have to be clear what Democrats stand for and build the organization to turn out the vote. That's why we're putting together the biggest, earliest neighbor-to-neighbor door-knocking event in an election year.

Last week nearly 3,000 people who received the email from Governor Dean stepped forward to fund the April 29th Neighbor-to-Neighbor Organizing Day (Newt wasn't among them). You can join them by making your contribution to help make contact with Americans who really have had enough.

Just $50 can put 233 pieces of literature in the hands potential volunteers and potential voters. Can you make a donation?

http://www.democrats.org/doorhangers

We've all had enough of the Republican culture of corruption, enough of Republican incompetence, and enough of cronies in important positions. We've had enough of being told to trust a president who has proven untrustworthy, and enough of being told to "stay the course" in Iraq with a strategy that has cost thousands of lives as Iraq descends into civil war.

We are not alone. Poll after poll shows the overwhelming majority of the American people have had enough of the Bush administration and the Republican Congress that refuses to hold it accountable for anything from bogus claims about Iraq to Katrina to illegal domestic spying.

But to make it happen we need to get to work right now. We can't wait -- it's up to us to mobilize Democrats from today through the April 29th canvass and right up through Election Day. Every bit counts. Make a contribution to the Democratic Party by visiting:

http://www.democrats.org/doorhangers

If we all come together, the results in November will make clear that Americans have had enough.

Unprecedented 50-State Canvass: Can We Do It?

Dear automat,

Never before has our party been more organized in advance of an election. With new staff hitting the ground everywhere from Alaska to Arkansas, we are going to fight for every vote in every corner of every state in 2006.

Right now we're preparing for the next big step in our 50-state strategy. On April 29th, thousands of volunteers will recruit hundreds of thousands more Americans committed to changing the status quo this year.

We're going to do it by making personal contact with our neighbors. April 29th will be the Democratic Party's first-ever National Neighbor-to-Neighbor Organizing Day. We're going to test our organization and build new relationships among volunteers with door-knocking events in communities across America.

We estimate that we need to print 500,000 pieces of literature to cover these events. With the cost of printing, plus the cost of shipping, staff time and logistics to make these events happen, we need an investment of $107,000 by Monday in order to kick-start this program.

Can you contribute something right now to help make this unprecedented program a reality? Click here to see the literature up close and make your donation:

http://www.democrats.org/doorhanger

All the signs point to this being a big election year for Democrats. But if we want to win in November, we've got to fight now to reach every community and build a solid operation before Election Day.

Volunteers knocking on doors on April 29th will carry a simple piece of literature. It summarizes the Democratic vision and offers an opportunity to make a connection and be a part of the movement for change.

Whether people receive the literature in person or on their doorknob, they will be able to plug into their local volunteer network, which will be crucial to building our organization now and turning out the vote in November.

On one day in April we can deliver a clear Democratic vision and offer people an opportunity to help make it a reality. Will you donate to help pull it off?

http://www.democrats.org/doorhanger

Next week you'll learn more about how to make the national Neighbor-to-Neighbor Organizing Day a reality on the ground in your community.

Headquarters staff and state parties are working around the clock to provide staging areas in key neighborhoods and the basic training materials to make the canvass as effective as possible.

It's up to you to execute this ambitious and historic operation.

It will only take 2,200 people donating $50 to fund this program. Please contribute whatever you can to help get this literature printed and distributed to the states:

Iraq Delusions

Dear automat,

Three years have now passed since the start of the Iraq war.

First Americans were misled by the use of manipulated intelligence and outright false claims about Iraq's ties to September 11th. Since then, we have received a steady stream of propaganda, declaring "Mission Accomplished", describing an insurgency in its "last throes" and claiming great progress as Iraq descends into civil war.

The distortions continued this afternoon, as President Bush took the stage and again misled people. Here's what he said:

BUSH: "First, just if I might correct a misperception, I don't think we ever said -- at least I know I didn't say that there was a direct connection between September the 11th and Saddam Hussein."

That is false. In fact, almost exactly three years ago he did just that:

"The use of armed forces against Iraq is consistent with the United States and other countries continuing to take the necessary actions against international terrorists and terrorist organizations, including those nations, organizations or person who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001." [President George W. Bush, Letter to Congress, 3/21/03]

Republicans in the White House and Congress have a three-part political strategy on Iraq: ignore the reality on the ground, cover up past failures and distortions, and attack the patriotism of anyone who demands accountability. None of that will solve anything in Iraq, and none of it will make America safer.

Fighting back requires only one strategy -- telling the truth. You can combat the distortions and get the truth out in your community by writing a letter to the editor of your local paper. Our letters-to-the-editor tool makes it fast and simple:

http://www.democrats.org/page/speakout/iraq

Every day more and more Americans are stepping up and speaking out about failed Republican leadership and what it's done to, and failed to do for, our country. And just as importantly, Democrats in Congress and in communities across the country are fighting back.

Last week nearly 90,000 Americans like you singled out Republican Senator Wayne Allard for accusing a Democrat of siding with terrorists by demanding accountability from the Bush administration for its illegal domestic spying program.

That quick reaction by Democrats who won't stand for this kind of disgusting attack put Allard on the hot seat and generated press coverage of his ridiculous, desperate comments. Your steadfast defense of Democrats like Harry Reid, Jack Murtha and Russ Feingold when they have stood up and demanded accountability shows everyone that there will be a political price for underhanded and un-American attacks.

People are tired of this administration's dangerous incompetence and consistently misleading statements. No wonder new polls confirm that Americans continue to lose confidence in George Bush and the Republicans' ability to lead. Only a third of Americans approve of the job Bush is doing overall, and 61 percent disapprove of Bush's handling of the war in Iraq.

These numbers mean that Americans are ready for us to lead.

That's why later this week you'll receive a note announcing a massive Democratic Party mobilization planned for next month. We are putting together the final details for you right now.

Check your email later this week for news about how you can play a leading role in the biggest, earliest election year mobilization in history.

'Russ Feingold is a traitor'

Dear automat,

That's what Republicans want you to think.

They are so scared of having a legitimate debate about Iraq or national security that they have only one reaction to news of their failures or calls for accountability.

On Monday, Democratic Senator Russ Feingold introduced legislation to censure the President for breaking the law by creating a secret domestic spying program. Agree or disagree with his proposal, as a Senator -- and as an American -- he has the right to speak his mind and express his views without Republican Senators questioning his patriotism.

But that's exactly what happened. This week Republican Senator Wayne Allard of Colorado, in an interview with Fox News radio, said in response to Feingold's action that he has "time and time again [sided] with the terrorists".

Send a message to Senator Allard: shame on him for questioning the patriotism of another Senator. Sign this petition and it will be delivered to Allard:

http://www.democrats.org/stopattackingruss

Agree or disagree with Russ Feingold's censure resolution, it is completely out of bounds to suggest that anyone demanding accountability is siding with terrorists. It is simply un-American to question the patriotism and loyalty of a Senator who wants the Congress to live up to its responsibility.

We've heard this cowardly nonsense from Republican leaders before. They attacked decorated Veteran and Democratic Rep. Jack Murtha for getting real on Iraq. They attacked Democratic Leader Harry Reid for shutting down the Senate to demand answers about manipulated pre-war intelligence.

They have ended the careers of generals who questioned Bush Administration talking points, and they even attack their own when respectable Republicans speak out on the disaster this administration has created in Iraq and its failure to close the gaps in our security here at home.

And time and again, the Republican controlled congress has consistently failed to conduct real oversight of the Administration, choosing instead to protect the Administration.

But polls show that nearly 70% of Americans reject this president and the Republican Congress that has failed to hold him accountable. And together we will hold Republicans accountable at the ballot box this year.

That's why the Democratic Party is putting the infrastructure on the ground now to fight in all 50 states. People everywhere are saying "enough is enough" -- and we will be ready to organize and fight everywhere with your help.

Please contribute whatever you can to make it happen:

http://www.democrats.org/accountability

The sick behavior of desperate Republicans will only stop when we fight back, and 2006 is the time to do it.

Thank you,

Five Better Ideas than Drilling in the Arctic Refuge

JohnKerry.com
Call your Senators

Dear Friend,

It didn't take long. Despite the stunning defeat we dealt them just a few months ago, proponents of drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge are at it again.

Because when they can't win the game they just change the rules, now they've inserted language in the Senate budget bill to hand over this precious natural treasure to big oil companies -- even though they know full well that it won't make a dime's worth of difference in making America more energy independent.

Tell your Senators to save the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and take real action toward achieving energy independence.

As we did last year, Senator Maria Cantwell and I are offering an amendment on the Senate floor to strike the proposal to drill in the Arctic Refuge. The vote could come within the next 24 to 48 hours. So please act now.

But, I'll bet that, like me, you're sick and tired of spending so much time defeating bad ideas in Washington when there are so many good ideas for America that get ignored in this city. So I'm asking you to do more than telling your Senators you want them to vote in favor of the Kerry-Cantwell Amendment. Tell them that you demand the Senate takes real action on an energy plan to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, bring the skyrocketing costs of energy down, and benefit the environment.

Tell your Senators to save the crown jewel of America's National Wildlife Refuge System and take real action on energy independence.

There are so many real and powerful things the Bush administration and the Republican Congress could do if they were serious about energy and the environment. But, they haven't lifted a finger on any of them.

They're so beholden to the big oil and gas companies that turning over America's most precious natural resources on a fool's errand search for the last drop of oil is all they can think about.

Tell them America won't settle for their pandering and posturing any longer.

Demand real action on energy independence -- and demand it now. And when they try to tell you we have no choice but to drill in the Arctic, tell them you have a better plan.

Sincerely,

John Kerry

P.S. Here are the five cornerstones of my 2020 Energy Plan that Congress should be acting on. When you tell them to vote for the Kerry-Cantwell amendment, tell your Senators to act on one or more of these genuine alternative energy ideas. That's what America needs.

  1. INCENTIVIZING RENEWABLE ENERGY

More than 20 states have implemented market-based Renewable Energy Portfolio programs that require utilities to gradually increase the portion of electricity produced from renewable resources such as wind, biomass, geothermal, and solar energy. We should build on that success at the national level. Tell your Senators to enact a nationwide Renewable Portfolio Standard so that 20% of our energy comes from renewable sources by 2020. A study by the Union of Concerned Scientists found that implementing this policy would save $26.6 billion and that commercial and industrial customers would be the biggest winners.

  2. PROMOTING BIO-ENERGY

We have the ability to transform our transportation sector from one that fuels our addiction to one that drives us toward a sustainable future. The President should build on that demand and fuel new production opportunities by supporting a mandate that agriculture will provide 20% of the total energy consumed in the United States by 2020.

  3. INVESTING IN ENERGY EFFICIENCY

In addition to developing new sources of energy, we must make better use of available energy. New technological advances in appliances, energy grid systems, and buildings can boost productivity, create jobs, improve the reliability and safety of the energy infrastructure, and make dramatic inroads in reducing air pollution. Congress should enact energy efficiency measures to decrease energy use by 20% by 2020.

  4. PROMOTING THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUPER-EFFICIENT VEHICLES

The government should provide an aggressive set of tax incentives and grants for consumers and for industries that are retooling plants to promote the manufacturing and purchase of hybrid vehicles, which run on a combination of gas and electric power to sharply increase efficiency. Twenty percent of all passenger cars and trucks on the road should be high-efficiency, low emissions hybrids by 2020.

  5. SETTING AMERICA FREE FROM MIDDLE EAST OIL

Today, America spends more than $500,000 per minute on foreign oil or $30 million per hour. We paid more than $42 billion for Persian Gulf imports alone in 2005. It is bad enough that these dollars will not help grow our domestic economy -- it is even worse when you consider their impact on our national security. Congress should act to eliminate America's oil imports from the Middle East by 2020.
