One day in, a game-changer

The Democratic Party
automat --

Moments ago, Republican senators voted for a second time to block Congress from even starting to debate Wall Street reform that would rein in big bank abuses and protect consumers.

Frankly, this is a game-changer, just as we kick off our Vote 2010 campaign. New polls shows that nearly two-thirds of Americans support Wall Street reform, but the GOP is transparently standing with the big banks.

We're whipping up a series of ads, aimed at highlighting how Republicans have locked arms with big banks in the name of killing Wall Street reform. But we need your help to get them on the air right away.

Chip in $5 or more to help us seize this moment.

Republicans know their vote to defend failed Wall Street practices is bad policy and bad politics -- that's why the RNC sent out a "Democrats side with Wall Street" press release to try to muddy the issue.

But we cannot let them get away with delaying, obstructing and trying to kill these needed reforms when so many Americans are still hurting because of reckless actions by big banks.

If we can tell this story clearly and forcefully, we'll put huge pressure on the GOP to back down and support Wall Street reform -- and make sure voters remember this moment when they head to the polls in November.

Can you donate $5 or more to help us make it happen?

The plan

The Democratic Party
automat --

We've got a fight on our hands.

The 2010 elections are just six months away, and Republicans are talking up their chances. They're convinced they'll defeat Democrats in Congress, win big majorities, and start rolling back all the progress we've worked so hard to make.

But I've got news for them: Today, Democrats are launching an unprecedented push to defend the President's allies in office and elect some great new Democrats to fight alongside him.

With the help of supporters like you, we'll run the strongest, most sophisticated effort this party has ever put together. And we'll beat back the Republicans.

The President has recorded a message for us Democrats to kick off this campaign. Take a look.

Watch the video

We'll be laying out our strategy for the midterm elections over the next few days. But first, the President wanted to tell you directly what's at stake:

The "bailout" smear

The Democratic Party
automat --

GOP leaders like Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell are smearing Wall Street reform as a "bailout" -- which is about as dishonest as you'd expect from the inventors of the "death panel" myth.

But it's no surprise. While they put on a populist front for the tea partiers, Republicans are locking arms with the same big banks that drove the economy into recession.

In a private meeting last week, McConnell even huddled with Wall Street executives about how to kill reform -- and cynically brought along one of the GOP's chief fundraisers.

Debate over reform is about to begin, so we're going up with ads to expose the mistruths and hypocrisy.

We don't have much time -- chip in $5 or more now to help us win this fight.

Democrats are working to pass a bill to hold big banks accountable, protect consumers from dishonest lenders, and put an end to taxpayer-funded bailouts forever.

But those facts don't seem to matter for Republicans. In interviews, on TV, and even on the floor of the Senate, GOP leaders keep repeating the same "reform is a bailout" falsehood. They're promising to oppose or water down legislation, while Wall Street lobbyists scurry around Capitol Hill, trying to carve out new loopholes and exemptions.

We learned from the health reform fight that we can overcome even the fiercest efforts by Republicans and their special-interest allies -- but only if we push back early, stand strong, and have the resources needed to fight.

Republicans pick a side

automat --

On Friday, all 41 Republicans in the Senate announced that they would stand with the big banks to oppose Wall Street reform legislation.

It's happening again -- just like with health care, Republican leaders are locking arms with special interests and threatening to filibuster what they can't defeat with a vote.

President Obama and Congressional Democrats are pushing hard to get this legislation passed, and we must show that the American people are standing with them in the fight to end taxpayer-funded bailouts, create a new system of consumer protections, and hold the banks accountable.

Join the campaign to reform Wall Street now:

P.S. -- Don't miss the President's message from Friday below.

-------------Original Message-------------
From: Barack Obama
Subject: Wall Street reform

Friend --

It has now been well over a year since the near collapse of our entire financial system that cost the nation more than 8 million jobs. To this day, hard-working families struggle to make ends meet.

We've made strides -- businesses are starting to hire, Americans are finding jobs, and neighbors who had given up looking are returning to the job market with new hope. But the flaws in our financial system that led to this crisis remain unresolved.

Wall Street titans still recklessly speculate with borrowed money. Big banks and credit card companies stack the deck to earn millions while far too many middle-class families, who have done everything right, can barely pay their bills or save for a better future.

We cannot delay action any longer. It is time to hold the big banks accountable to the people they serve, establish the strongest consumer protections in our nation's history -- and ensure that taxpayers will never again be forced to bail out big banks because they are "too big to fail."

That is what Wall Street reform will achieve, why I am so committed to making it happen, and why I'm asking for your help today.

Please stand with me to show your support for Wall Street reform.

We know that without enforceable, commonsense rules to check abuse and protect families, markets are not truly free. Wall Street reform will foster a strong and vibrant financial sector so that businesses can get loans; families can afford mortgages; entrepreneurs can find the capital to start a new company, sell a new product, or offer a new service.

Consumer financial protections are currently spread across seven different government agencies. Wall Street reform will create one single Consumer Financial Protection Agency -- tasked with preventing predatory practices and making sure you get the clear information, not fine print, needed to avoid ballooning mortgage payments or credit card rate hikes.

Reform will provide crucial new oversight, give shareholders a say on salaries and bonuses, and create new tools to break up failing financial firms so that taxpayers aren't forced into another unfair bailout. And reform will keep our economy secure by ensuring that no single firm can bring down the whole financial system.

With so much at stake, it is not surprising that allies of the big banks and Wall Street lenders have already launched a multi-million-dollar ad campaign to fight these changes. Arm-twisting lobbyists are already storming Capitol Hill, seeking to undermine the strong bipartisan foundation of reform with loopholes and exemptions for the most egregious abusers of consumers.

I won't accept anything short of the full protection that our citizens deserve and our economy needs. It's a fight worth having, and it is a fight we can win -- if we stand up and speak out together.

So I'm asking you to join me, starting today, by adding your name as a strong supporter of Wall Street reform:

http://my.democrats.org/StandForWallStreetReform

Thank you,

President Barack Obama

Repeal everything?

The Democratic Party
automat --

It started the moment we passed health care reform.

Mitt Romney said, "the act should be repealed" and Michael Steele announced that Republicans would make "every effort" to do so. Yesterday, Rep. John Boehner said that it's still their "number one priority."

But now we're learning that their ambitions don't stop there. Last week, Newt Gingrich promised a conference of conservatives and tea partiers that Republicans "will repeal virtually everything" passed by Congressional Democrats and President Obama.

That's the new goal for the GOP -- win this fall, then roll back all that we've accomplished.

This is the next phase in our fight for change, and our challenge is two-fold: First, spread the facts about how these reforms are improving lives. Then, win in November, so they won't get a chance to undo everything we've worked so hard to achieve.

Please chip in $5 or more to help us win the fight.

If Republicans get their way, they'll roll back everything we've done to lower taxes, create jobs, ensure fair pay for women, and restore funding for stem cell research.

To win this fight, we're building the top rapid-response team in politics, putting talented organizers on the ground in all fifty states, and running hard-hitting ads to expose the Republican agenda.

We'll show that we have the strength to take on the tea party, Republicans, and special interests who are teaming up to repeal all that the President and Democrats in Congress have done with your help.

Please donate $5 or more to help Democrats defend the progress we've made:
