Something he should share

It's a long-held political tradition for presidential candidates to release their tax returns.

Last week, Newt Gingrich released his online. Rick Santorum promised to release his, as soon as he finishes them at home. And Mitt Romney? Well, we're not sure.

South Carolina's heading to the polls today, and a lot of the state's voters have asked for them before they vote.

Why so shy, Mitt? We don't know what's in them, but we think it's something he should share.

Sign on to ask Mitt to come clean and release his tax returns.

You see, first, Mitt said he wouldn't release them at all. Then he begrudgingly said he'd release one year's worth -- after this year's tax season. And when asked at Thursday's debate if he'd follow precedent and release more than one year's worth, the best answer he could muster was an awkward "maybe."

Every GOP presidential nominee for the past 40 years has released them. Even some of Mitt's biggest supporters, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, have called on him to level with voters on his taxes.

At the same debate, Mitt was reminded that when his father, George Romney, ran for president in 1967, he released not one year's worth of his returns, but twelve. Why twelve? Well, in the words of George, "One year could be a fluke, perhaps done for show."

We think George is right on this. And Newt. And Rick. And every other GOP presidential nominee for the past 40 years.

It's time for Mitt to come clean. Tell him to follow precedent and do what's right -- come clean and release his tax returns:

Big news on the 2012 Democratic Convention

We're making some big changes to this year's Democratic National Convention.

Just like we broke with conventions of the past in 2008, we're moving the final night of this year's convention to Bank of America Stadium, home of the Carolina Panthers. There will be room for 70,000 people, so more folks will be able to come out and celebrate as President Obama accepts the Democratic nomination for re-election.

It should be a wonderful night -- and it's not the only way we're doing things differently this year. In the upcoming months, we'll be asking folks for their ideas on how to make this convention more open and accessible than ever before.

Most national conventions are four days long. But to honor President Obama's belief in organizing our neighborhoods and communities, we're shortening the convention to three days to make room to celebrate the Carolinas with a day of organizing.

To kick off the convention, we'll be getting together at the Charlotte Motor Speedway on Labor Day to organize and get ready for November. It's a way to build our organization -- and help ramp up our efforts in battleground states like North Carolina, which President Obama won by just 14,000 votes in 2008.

"FLOTUS"

When you become president, one thing that happens overnight is that you and everyone you love get a bunch of new nicknames.

I was already pretty used to this. But "FLOTUS," short for First Lady of the United States, is really something else.

I'm writing because our FLOTUS, Michelle, turns 48 on Tuesday, and I know I'm not her only fan out there.

These Republican candidates spent in some cases more than a year -- in Mitt Romney's case seven years -- campaigning in Iowa to be the next president.

But GOP voters there couldn't decisively get behind anyone.

Who exactly leads the Republican race going forward isn't clear, but we do know two things:

1) The extremist Tea Party agenda won a clear victory. No matter who the Republicans nominate, we'll be running against someone who has embraced that agenda in order to win -- vowing to let Wall Street write its own rules, end Medicare as we know it, roll back gay rights, leave the troops in Iraq indefinitely, restrict a woman's right to choose, and gut Social Security to pay for more tax cuts for millionaires and corporations.

2) We'll be facing an onslaught of unprecedented spending from outside groups funded by corporations and anonymous donors. In Iowa alone, so-called "super PACs" spent $12.9 million on almost exclusively negative ads. These groups will turn their fire even more directly on us in the weeks ahead to prove that their candidate is the most anti-Obama.

This race is officially on -- and if we want to win, the only way is to out-organize them on the ground.

Many observers still think Mitt Romney will be the Republican nominee. If he is, we will be prepared. But it's curious that no one can really explain how, when or why the 70-plus percent of Republicans saying in polls and in Iowa that Mitt Romney's not their candidate will suddenly come around.

So the path ahead for Romney -- or whichever of the Republican candidates is going to emerge from this process -- is sadly and starkly very clear: to run even further to the extreme right, and make even more dangerous promises that threaten not only the progress we've made but the fundamental fabric of American society.

We also know that candidates who take these extreme positions can, in the right circumstances, win not only a primary but also a general election in just about any state.

Just ask the Tea Party senators from Pennsylvania and Kentucky, and the Tea Party governors in Florida and Wisconsin.

Watching the circus on TV, it's tempting to think it's almost funny -- but this is not a joke.

We've got to be ready.

What Democrats do

If you follow political news like I do, you may remember this year for its GOP horse race: who was up, who was down, who had an "oops" moment. But that's not how I'll remember it.

I'll remember it as a pretty incredible year for Democrats. Here's why:

Just in the last week, we've seen solid evidence that health care reform is working: 2.5 million Americans are now insured thanks to a provision in the Affordable Care Act that allows young adults to stay on their parent's health insurance, more than double the number previously estimated.

And with the last troops leaving this past Sunday, the war in Iraq has come to a responsible end. Because of the veterans provisions of the American Jobs Act and the Hiring Heroes Act, which provide tax incentives to businesses who hire veterans in need of work, our troops coming home and all our veterans know that they can get the help they need in finding work and supporting their families.

These are the kinds of fights Democrats are waging -- and winning. They're crucial victories, but they don't happen without you.

Next year, the stakes will be even higher. That's why I'm asking you to step up right now and say you're ready for the fights ahead:

Chip in $3 more for 2012.

Next year's election will be huge, that's for sure -- but the work we did in 2011 shows just what a grassroots campaign can do. Across the country this year, Democrats worked together and fought critical statewide battles on the ground.

In Mississippi, folks worked tirelessly to protect a woman's right to choose and soundly defeated the Personhood amendment, which would've made abortion illegal, including in cases of rape or incest, and even banned some forms of birth control.

Up in Maine, statewide Democratic groups worked together to overturn the state legislature's recent ban on allowing people to register and vote on the same day -- a nearly 40-year tradition that's helped the state have some of the highest voter turnout rates in the country.

And in the bellwether state of Ohio, the state Democratic party and progressive allies collected more than 300,000 signatures to stop a law that would greatly reduce how and when Ohioans can early vote -- and put it up for a statewide vote next year. Thanks in part to thousands who were able to cast their ballots early, Ohio voters in November successfully repealed a collective bargaining law that would've stripped away the rights of teachers and firefighters to negotiate for important benefits and working conditions.

We have a ways to go to get the economy working for everyone, and there's much more work to be done.

But we have a lot to feel good about. We've worked together at the national level to make change that's going to affect millions of lives every day, like repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," and we've banded together in our states and communities to stand for our party's principles.

It's what Democrats do.

But don't doubt that for every victory we've had this year, the GOP is ready and waiting to reverse it. Repealing health care reform, reinstating "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," restricting voting rights, and putting Personhood amendments on the ballot in other states are all things the other side has promised to do if given the chance.

That's why we need to be ready to fight for the change we've made -- and make certain we'll get to keep pushing for more.

Iraq

Dorothy Cooper

Dorothy Cooper was born before women or African Americans in our country could exercise the right to vote. She grew up in a Jim Crow-divided South, and saw the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965.

Dorothy is 96 years old. In 70 years, she's missed just one election. And she's never had a problem voting -- until this year.

Why? Because in more than 40 states, including Tennessee, where Dorothy lives, Republicans are introducing and passing laws that make voting more difficult for everyone -- especially for minorities, young voters, and seniors.

We're fighting back -- and you can help. Please donate whatever you can to support Democrats and help fund the work we're doing to beat back voter suppression efforts -- one state legislature at a time.

I head up our voter protection team, and we have folks digging in on these suppression efforts every day. Earlier this fall, thousands of folks in Ohio fought a GOP-led initiative to severely restrict early voting. They collected hundreds of thousands of signatures to enact a "citizens' veto" and prevent the law from going into effect. As a result, more than 500,000 people were able to cast a ballot in the elections there this past November, and Ohio voters will be able to vote early in the 2012 election.

That's not a victory for Democrats: It's a victory for our democracy. Help support Democrats and our team's work to beat back voter suppression.

GOP leaders have actually said themselves: They do better when fewer people show up to vote.

That's why these efforts are no coincidence. They're making voting more difficult, on purpose, and if enough people don't step up, they'll keep getting away with it.

Republicans' suppression efforts go beyond the standard Democrat-versus-Republican back and forth. They are an affront to our democracy -- plain and simple.

It is absolutely ridiculous that in Texas you can now vote with a gun license but not a student ID. Or that many of these GOP mandates exclude government-issued veterans ID cards, making it more difficult for our vets to vote.

Or that someone like Dorothy Cooper can show up at her local DMV with her birth certificate, voter registration card, and numerous other residency and identity documents and still be denied the state ID card that Republicans have said she needs in order to vote in her state.

But that is what is happening right now.

Here's why:

In at least 40 states, Republicans have introduced laws that would make voting more difficult for everyone -- particularly minorities and young voters.

Coincidence? Of course not. It's all for partisan gain. GOP leaders have said it themselves: They do better when fewer people show up to vote.

That's right: Right here in America, some people are actually trying to make sure fewer people show up at the polls next year.

This is an issue that Democrats have always fought for -- bringing more people into the electoral process. It's central to who we are. That's why we're jumping to action right now -- and our vigilant voter protection team is on the case, digging in on these suppression efforts every day. Check out our report now.

When you do, you'll see that some of these new laws are downright absurd. You can vote with a gun license in Texas, but not a student ID. In some states, even a Veterans ID card wouldn't be sufficient photo identification to vote. Republicans are trying to justify their suppression efforts by claiming "voter impersonation" is rampant, but here's what's funny:

Between 2001 and 2007, there were just nine possible occurrences of voter impersonation. (During that same period, 352 people were killed by lightning, and there were more than 32,000 reports of UFO sightings.)

Republican lawmakers have already rammed through laws like these in Wisconsin and Florida, and given that they currently control both chambers in 24 other state legislatures -- nearly all of which also have Republican governors -- I'll bet they're thinking they're going to keep getting away with this.

They're banking on you not doing anything about it. Let's show them that's a bad assumption to make -- and that we're just getting started fighting this.

Here's how we can beat this:

First, we spread the word about these laws, so that we're poised to fight them -- one ballot initiative, one state legislature at a time.

Second, we compound our on-the-ground efforts to register and educate new voters in all 50 states. Because here's something we know: One of the best ways to thwart any voter suppression efforts is going to be by making 2012 the largest turnout ever -- even larger than 2008.

Start Israel at zero?

Here's something I never thought I'd hear an American presidential candidate pledge to do:

Cut all foreign aid for Israel to zero.

But that's exactly what happened at the Republican debate on Saturday, when Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, and Rick Perry raced each other to the extremes of Tea Party isolationism, saying they'd "start everything at zero" in the foreign aid budget and force Israel and every other ally to make their case for receiving American assistance.

It's outrageous and dangerous -- and it shows a critical ignorance of how a president needs to act. It is never responsible to raise doubts about our commitment to the security of a key ally like Israel.

Stand up to the extreme elements of the Republican Party -- join the call to reject "zeroing out" our foreign aid to Israel.

Mitt Romney and other Republican candidates have spent a lot of time lately saying how much they support Israel -- and openly questioning President Obama's commitment to the Jewish state.

But a stance like this tells us two really important things:

1) These guys are so eager to please the most extreme elements of their Tea Party base that they'd forget about one of the most loyal allies our country has.

2) They fundamentally don't understand our current foreign policy agreements, like the commitments we've made to Israel that establish certain levels of aid for years to come.

At the end of the day, foreign aid is a tiny fraction of the federal budget -- less than one percent -- that goes a long way to support our national security and economic goals abroad. The cuts these candidates propose wouldn't make a dent in the deficit, but they would wreak absolute havoc on our foreign policy and America's standing in the world.

In typical fashion, the Romney campaign tried to say two different things to two different audiences, releasing a statement to try to walk back his words -- saying he was referring only to Pakistan. But one look at the transcript shows otherwise: "One of the things we have to do with our foreign aid commitments, the ongoing foreign aid commitments, I agree with Governor Perry. You start everything at zero."

While his campaign is already trying to wiggle out of it, Romney himself has been conspicuously silent on the matter. He might be hoping he can get away with pandering to the Tea Party isolationists, but we won't let him.

A disturbing pattern

Mitt Romney recently described the President's plan to pass the American Jobs Act and extend the payroll tax cut -- a measure that would save working families an average of $1,500 a year -- as "temporary little band-aids."

But after his earlier remarks were widely criticized, he said the exact opposite at last week's GOP presidential debate in Michigan.

While the media frenzy surrounding the debate focused on a gaffe from one of our other opponents, the most amazing moment from my perspective was Mitt reversing course on an issue that anyone running for president should have a clear position on: Extend a tax cut worth $1,500 a year to working families. Or ask the middle-class to pay more so millionaires and billionaires don't have to.

In Mitt's world, maybe $1,500 isn't a lot of money. But it's worth an awful lot to millions of families' budgets. And if he's unable to take a stand on something so critical to the middle class, how can we know how he'd react when confronting a crisis from the White House?

This kind of behavior is part of a disturbing pattern where Romney says one thing and then the exact opposite, sometimes within the span of a few paragraphs, and hopes no one calls him on it. So we're putting together a list of people who will be the cops on the beat whenever Mitt wants to have it both ways, and help make sure all Americans know exactly how he operates.

On Wednesday night, one of the moderators asked Mitt about his little problem. His response:

"I think people understand I'm a man of steadiness and constancy."

Saying it doesn't make it so.

On reproductive rights, climate change, immigration, taxes, foreign policy, gay rights, gun control, and labor issues, Romney has reversed his positions -- often dramatically -- leaving his supporters and opponents alike feeling some combination of angry, confused, and betrayed.

If he keeps up this pace, it's going to take all of us to keep track of Mitt's flip-flopping.

This Veterans Day

Here's something that makes this Veterans Day great.

Yesterday, the Senate passed a critical piece of the President's jobs plan: two provisions to help get veterans back to work. They're called the Returning Heroes and Wounded Warrior Tax Credits, and they help provide jobs to veterans by giving tax credits to businesses that hire disabled or unemployed vets.

With 850,000 veterans currently unemployed and more than a million returning from Iraq and Afghanistan over the next 5 years as we continue to bring troops home, making sure they can find work has got to be a priority. The President made it one.

And the plan that passed yesterday is an important first step.

It wouldn't have happened without supporters like you talking with neighbors, calling and tweeting your representatives, and doing everything you can to keep the pressure on Congress to pass the President's jobs plan. You spoke out loud and clear, and finally, the Senate listened.

In honor of Veterans Day, we're collecting messages of support to thank our servicemen and women for putting their lives on the line for our country every day.

Watch: Romney endorses "personhood" amendment

Mitt Romney has taken a position that every woman in this country should know about:

When asked on Fox News whether he would have supported a "personhood" constitutional amendment, Mitt said, "Absolutely."

"Personhood" amendments are the notorious measures now being considered in states like Mississippi, Florida, and Ohio, that would elevate a fertilized human egg to the status of a legal person. They would ban IUDs, the morning-after pill, in-vitro fertilization, and all abortions -- with no exceptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest or in cases where the life of a woman is at stake.

In other words, a leading candidate for the GOP nomination for president is on the record in favor of a law that would classify literally all abortions -- and even many forms of birth control -- as murder.

To be clear: This is the most radical position any of the Republican candidates have taken on this issue, and may be the most radical position any of them have taken on any substantive issue in the race for the nomination so far.

Mitt has an uncanny ability to change course depending on the day, so we put together a video to show exactly where he stands on a woman's right to choose -- whether she's choosing emergency contraception, or to save her own life.

Watch it, and then say you'll be with us in holding him accountable.

Romney, who has held a variety of positions on abortion in his 17 years of running for public office, presumably understands the implications of criminalizing birth control and abortion.

If he wants to be in the national spotlight, if he thinks he deserves to be trusted with the highest political office on the planet, he has to be willing to take responsibility for his words and the consequences of the policies he claims to support.

This is so much bigger than his political calculations. It's literally a life-or-death proposition, and it's not limited to Mississippi, Ohio, or Florida. Personhood amendments like the one in Mississippi are a direct affront to the federal right to privacy afforded by Roe vs. Wade.

If Romney wants to take the position that abortion and birth control are equal to murder, that's up to him. But we'll hold him accountable for it, and not let anyone forget that he's made the choice to go this far to the right on this issue:

Commit to volunteer

One year from this Sunday, Americans will be going to the polls to decide where they want this country to go in the next four years. If we want our friends and neighbors to make the right choice one year from now, we need to decide today to get involved.

We all know that to win on November 6th, 2012, we need to build this campaign now. We need to register voters, knock on doors, talk to our neighbors about the President's goals and accomplishments, and lay the groundwork for the year to come.

That's why the 2012 campaign is asking people to commit to volunteer in the months to come. Democrats across the country are jumping in to be a part of it. We only have twelve months left to build this organization -- what happens next November depends on the work we do now.

Will you commit today to volunteer for 2012?

No matter who our Republican opponent ends up being, the only way we will win is by being stronger, smarter, and more organized than the other side. When you commit to volunteer for 2012, you're taking ownership of the reality we'll all face the day after the election.

This campaign may be won on November 6th, but the real work will happen every single day between now and then. Pledge to make phone calls this weekend, go canvassing this spring, or take on a leadership role in your community.

My father

I knew that when my father left the White House 10 years ago, he was not going to stop working to give people the opportunities, health, and tools necessary to live a better life.

The American Jobs Act is not a controversial bill.

Gay men and lesbians in the military no longer have to hide who they are, and the servicemembers who were discharged under this policy can re-enlist.

This is one of the administration's signature achievements. Countless Americans fought hard to end this law over the course of nearly two decades, and President Obama is proud to have signed the repeal.

But today's news isn't just a policy promise kept -- it's a personal promise kept to the thousands of people who needed and deserved this change.

Pledge of allegiance to the Tea Party

If you spent this weekend on a beach or at a barbecue, what you missed was the clearest set of signals we've had yet about the far-right, negative turn the Republican field is taking in this election.

This past weekend as Rick Perry entered the race, we watched Mitt Romney argue that "corporations are people" and Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul -- the two most extreme candidates in the field -- come out on top of the Iowa Straw poll. The Tea Party has all the momentum right now in the GOP primaries, and that's what knocked Tim Pawlenty out of this race. He quit on Sunday.

Disturbingly, the view in the media was that Pawlenty was too "nice" for the Republican voters and "didn't fit with an electorate who wanted confrontation with President Obama at all costs." In other words: You ain't seen nothing yet.

The actual Iowa caucuses are still a half year away, but as the field narrows it's become clear the next six months will feature a divisive cast of Republican candidates and produce a GOP nominee who's pledged allegiance to the Tea Party agenda -- an agenda whose first item is to destroy Democrats no matter the consequences for our country.

While Romney, Perry, Bachmann, and the others continue their race to the right, we're busy organizing -- recruiting new supporters, training volunteers, and building for November 6, 2012. We need you to be a part of it.

Governor Perry's entry adds a new personality into the mix, but not a single new policy.

Like every one of his opponents, from Mitt Romney to Rick Santorum, he's signed on to the Washington Republican plan that essentially ends Medicare, cuts K-12 education, and eliminates hundreds of thousands of jobs. He shares their view that big corporations, not seniors and middle class families, are the ones in need of some relief.

In a field without policy differences, we can be sure that the nomination will be decided by rhetoric -- and the prize will go to the candidate willing to launch the most vicious, negative attack on our party and our principles.

We've got to be ready to answer that anger with resolve and preparation, and we need to show that their far-right views -- and the dangers they pose to our country -- only make us more committed to winning in 2012.

Extreme aims

The 2012 Republicans are in for a real test this week. They're gathering in Iowa for a debate on Thursday and an important straw poll on Saturday where conservative activists will select the person they think ought to be the GOP nominee.

Whoever fares the best in these two contests will come out of the weekend with a burst of momentum. And with so much at stake, you can be sure that these Republicans will reach new lows in their attacks on the President and new extremes in their plans to gut programs that America's seniors and middle class families rely on.

That means we need to be ready to beat back their misstatements with fact-checks, showcase good analysis from other debate watchers, and respond to their attacks in real time.

Even though this election is just getting started, for some Republicans Thursday might be their last chance for their campaigns to catch fire.

Obama: "Make your voice heard"

Monday night, President Obama addressed the nation because it's time for Congress to come together and vote to ensure that America can meet its financial obligations.

This is something that every President has asked lawmakers to do when necessary, and up until now, Congress has always acted. It's necessary because lawmakers have already voted for this spending, but haven't yet authorized the President to pay those bills. And if we can't reach a solution, the United States may default on its debts. That outcome is unacceptable.

There is a disagreement for one reason: The President has proposed a balanced approach that pairs an increase in the debt ceiling with responsible steps to reduce our country's long-term deficit, but a core group of Republicans is refusing to accept any form of compromise that might force millionaires and billionaires and oil companies and corporate jet owners to pay their fair share.

Time is running out. We have less than one week to prevent our nation's first default on its obligations in history, and that's why President Obama ended his speech by asking all of us to get involved. Speaker Boehner has heard from the President on this issue, but he hasn't heard from you.

Call him now at 202-225-0600, then take a moment to let us know how your call went.

Right now, there are lawmakers from both parties who understand what's at stake if we fail to reach an agreement. But there are some who are more interested in petty partisanship than genuine solutions to our nation's problems -- and they have brought us to the edge of disaster.

As the President spoke, he said this:

"The American people may have voted for divided government, but they didn't vote for a dysfunctional government. So I'm asking you all to make your voice heard... If you believe we can solve this problem through compromise, send that message."

And since then, we've been hearing reports about a flood of calls to the Capitol -- that have at times overwhelmed the Congressional phone and email systems.

My first campaign made me an organizer.

Every day, through a hot Florida summer, I knocked on doors and asked my neighbors for their support. I had five opponents in that primary, but on Election Day, I beat every single one of them -- with 53 percent of the vote.

Since that race, I've known exactly how important organizing can be. It taught me the principles I hope to bring to the Democratic Party as its Chair.

On my first day in this job, I recorded a short video to talk about my plans for our party. Watch it, then pledge to volunteer and help elect President Obama and Democrats up and down the ticket in 2012.

We have big fights ahead, and I want to win them. In order to re-elect the President and win new majorities in Congress, we have to lay the groundwork for those victories now. When I started, Patrick Gaspard brought me some suggestions that supporters like you submitted to help us make our party better.

I read feedback from people like Bill in Michigan who asked us to expand our organizing programs and Dick in Pennsylvania who said, "The message of all the good the President has done and accomplished must be communicated at the personal level by people in each community."

I saw ideas from supporters like Kolman in Ohio and Alan in New York -- who suggested that we deploy the power of charts, graphics, and striking multimedia to help win arguments and strengthen the facts of our case.

I heard from those like Vanessa in Colorado, who asked us to focus on research and messaging to push back against smears from our opponents, and Angela in North Carolina, who said, "Arm me with facts so I can counter the misinformation my friends seem to have on the tip of their tongues."

This is exactly the kind of thinking -- smart and supporter-driven -- that I want to guide our work. That's part of why I'm so excited about this job.

The President's speech on Afghanistan

Last night, President Obama gave a speech about the future of our military engagement in Afghanistan -- and the role America should play in the world.

Last night's spectacle

I'm writing to you from Manchester, New Hampshire, where last night I witnessed a spectacle that every single Obama supporter needs to hear about.

The major GOP presidential candidates debated for the first time and made one thing very clear: They have no agenda but to take down President Obama.

They even nodded along when one called the Obama administration a "destructive force," and they said nothing when another said the President has "embraced our enemies."

Last night was a wake-up call to anyone who thinks they can sit tight while the Republicans battle each other for the nomination: The campaign to defeat Barack Obama and roll back his entire record is well underway. And that's the one thing on which all of their potential candidates agree.

It was seven against one. Since the President won't be speaking for himself at one of these debates until next year, our best response is to show the Republicans that when they attack Barack Obama, it only makes us fight back harder.

Fundamentally, last night's debate was about which of their candidates would turn back the clock the farthest.

They came out for re-fighting the battles they lost on Wall Street reform and the health care law. They backed reinstating "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

They actually spent time debating whether they think Sarah Palin would have made a better vice president than Joe Biden (spoiler alert: They still think so!).

But the words "education" and "middle class" were never uttered even once.

These people want to be president

Monday's Republican presidential debate in New Hampshire isn't the first of the 2012 election, but it may be the first one that counts.

This time, they're bringing their varsity squad: Mitt Romney and Tim Pawlenty will be there, along with Herman Cain (polling second in Iowa), Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich, Michele Bachmann, and Rick Santorum.

And that can only mean one thing: In Monday's debate, these candidates will go all out to play up their extremist appeal by attacking President Obama.

We need to be ready to fight back.

So we'll be here all night Monday, fact-checking them when they go off the rails, showcasing smart comments from others keeping track, and providing you a place to follow along.

The attacks on Medicare failed

Last night, Kathy Hochul did something that few of us would have thought possible a month ago: She won a special election for a congressional seat in New York that hadn't gone for a Democrat in more than a decade. She won because the Republican candidate, Jane Corwin, embraced the GOP plan to end Medicare as we know it -- and Kathy never let anyone forget it.

And unfortunately for the GOP, this issue is quickly becoming a litmus test for them nationally.

Even Newt Gingrich -- not exactly a progressive -- recognizes that a Medicare phase-out is a dangerous proposition. But when he rightly criticized the plan as "right-wing social engineering," conservative pundits and activists pummeled him so hard he was forced to "apologize" for his "mistake."

Republicans have boxed themselves into a corner with this issue, and Democrats can win more victories by making it clear that the GOP wants to make dramatic cuts to a program that keeps millions of Americans healthy -- ending Medicare as we know it.

We want to put more Republicans in the same position as Corwin and Gingrich, and we need to come out of the gate strong.

There's nothing hypothetical about the Republican plan to end Medicare. When the proposal came up in Congress, all but six House Republicans voted for it. The GOP has already registered its approval.

With this issue, Republicans have no good choices. More than 80 percent of voters don't approve of their Medicare phase-out -- so they must either continue supporting the plan they already voted for, or flip-flop and anger their base.

And because the public understands that this proposal from the GOP would end a program that seniors rely on every day, our job is to get Republican candidates on the record.

If the trouble this caused Gingrich is any indication, the rest of these presidential candidates are in for some rough days on the campaign trail -- if we can get them to tell the public where they stand.

In the weeks and months ahead, that's exactly what we plan to do. Working online and off, we'll make sure that every Republican running for President, and that every one of their candidates for the House or Senate, gets asked exactly where he or she stands on the GOP plan to phase out Medicare.

We have to keep turning up the pressure -- just like Kathy Hochul did in New York.

Birther nonsense

When one-time Republican frontrunner Donald Trump dropped out of the presidential race, I thought we were done with all this birther nonsense.

But I guess right-wing conspiracy theorist Jerome Corsi finally got to prove a Democrat wrong. Corsi just released his latest book, called -- wait for it -- Where's the Birth Certificate?

Fortunately, the Obama campaign knows just how to handle things like this: Treat them like the joke they are. That's why I wanted to be sure you saw the campaign's email from yesterday offering "Made in the USA" mugs with the President's birth certificate. You can get yours here:

Let me introduce you to Jerome Corsi.

This week he released a new book that the publisher says will be a bestseller "of historic proportions."

The title is Where's the Birth Certificate? -- yes, really.

Corsi's work is a greatest-hits reel of delusions, ranging from 9/11 conspiracies to claiming that there is an infinite supply of oil in the Earth's core. In 2008, he published a book about Barack Obama claiming, among other things, that he (a) is a secret Muslim; (b) is secretly anti-military; (c) secretly dealt drugs; and (d) secretly supported terrorist actions when he was eight years old. So many secrets!

FactCheck.org called Corsi's work "a mishmash of unsupported conjecture, half-truths, logical fallacies and outright falsehoods."

There's really no way to make this stuff completely go away. The only thing we can do is laugh at it -- and make sure as many other people as possible are in on the joke.

Last year, the President said, "I can't spend all of my time with my birth certificate plastered on my forehead."

There's nothing courageous about it

For days, I've been reading in the press about the "courage" of a Republican budget proposal that abolishes Medicare to pay for more tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires and slashes investments in energy, education, and infrastructure.

On Wednesday, I heard President Obama say exactly what I've been thinking: There's nothing courageous about it.

The Republicans are pledging to cut investments to clean energy by 70 percent, education by 25 percent, and transportation by 30 percent. Their plan would see as many as 50 million people lose their health insurance in order to reduce the deficit. Instead of creating jobs, they want to create $1 trillion in new tax breaks for the wealthy.

That's not a brave vision for the future. It's a rejection of the idea that there are brighter days ahead.

Today, the House of Representatives will meet to vote on the GOP budget proposal, and if they insist on pushing this plan forward -- if they can't come together with the President to find common ground -- we'll make sure their constituents know about it. If they choose to try to privatize Medicare, we will put ads on the air and organizers on the ground, and we'll talk about this vote over and over again. We'll make this stick.

But we need your help to do it.

This week, President Obama offered a path forward that I believe in: $4 trillion in deficit reduction; responsible investments to improve our schools, fix crumbling roads, and develop clean energy; and a total rejection of the notion that spending cuts must come on the backs of seniors and poor children.

Today, we are filing papers to launch our 2012 campaign.

We're doing this now because the politics we believe in does not start with expensive TV ads or extravaganzas, but with you -- with people organizing block-by-block, talking to neighbors, co-workers, and friends. And that kind of campaign takes time to build.

So even though I'm focused on the job you elected me to do, and the race may not reach full speed for a year or more, the work of laying the foundation for our campaign must start today.

We've always known that lasting change wouldn't come quickly or easily. It never does. But as my administration and folks across the country fight to protect the progress we've made -- and make more -- we also need to begin mobilizing for 2012, long before the time comes for me to begin campaigning in earnest.

William's future

I want to tell you about a family in Minnesota.

Justin and Kari live in Brooklyn Park, right outside of Minneapolis. They're parents to three children. Their three-year-old, William, was born with a genetic disorder called tuberous sclerosis complex.

For the rest of his life, William will wrestle with tumors in his brain, his heart, his kidneys, his skin, and possibly other major organs. He must take medication to control seizures and faces the threat of kidney disease.

What Justin and Kari want for William is a future. And because of health reform, that's what he'll have.

Today, insurance companies are no longer able to discriminate against William because of the condition he's dealt with since birth. Now, Justin and Kari know they'll be able to get the kind of care that William needs -- today and into the future.

Their story isn't unique, but it's one of many that need to be told. We all know people whose lives have been changed because of the Affordable Care Act, even if we don't realize it. So we've found a way to show exactly how reform is working for all of us -- for our parents, our siblings, our kids, ourselves.

Unacceptable

Democrats and Republicans have to reach an agreement to keep the government operating.

Right now, President Obama is calling on both sides to come to the table and reach a reasonable solution -- a plan that builds for the future while eliminating wasteful spending in the present. A plan where cutting spending is done judiciously -- not recklessly. A plan with investments that create jobs -- not cuts that eliminate them.

But the current Republican proposal is packed with extreme cuts that are clearly serving a political agenda -- cutting billions from Head Start, slashing Pell Grants and other programs that help students pay for college, and completely eliminating funding for Title X family-planning services.

It's not a responsible plan to cut spending -- but a set of policy prescriptions intended to appease the most extreme wing of their party.

And while cuts like these make the Republican plan objectionable -- it's the fact that it puts nearly 1 million jobs at risk that makes it absolutely unacceptable.

So we're standing with President Obama in a very public way -- with an open letter calling on Republicans to work with him and Democrats in Congress to pass a commonsense budget that works for the American people. Supporters will hand-deliver the petition, with your signature, to House Republicans -- making sure our combined voices ring loud and clear.

Add your name to speak out against the Republicans' proposed spending plan -- and call on them to come to the table ready to negotiate.

Right now, the debate surrounding our budget should be about one thing -- people.

An out-of-work father of three isn't concerned with advancing the Republicans' social agenda. All he's thinking about right now is getting back to work so he can pay his mortgage and his gas bill.

A single mother who relies on Head Start for her four-year-old isn't thinking about the political sound bite of the moment -- she is concerned with making sure her daughter can keep up when she enters kindergarten next year.

The American people don't care about political back-and-forth or partisan ideology. They want their government to do right by its citizens.

And that's where the Republican plan falls short.

They would close more than 16,000 classrooms, lay off 55,000 teachers, and cause 218,000 children to be kicked out of early-childhood education programs.

They would slash homeland security investments and lay off thousands of police officers and firefighters, leaving our communities less safe.

They would defund health insurance reform, doing away with the cost savings and vital patient protections relied upon by millions of Americans around the country.

They would eliminate funding for Planned Parenthood, ending thousands of health center jobs across the country and leaving millions of women without access to preventive care.

Now, President Obama knows that this must be a shared sacrifice, and that some cuts must be made -- and he stands ready to work together to find a commonsense solution.

But the current Republican plan would knock this country down just as we've begun to stand back up.

The American people deserve better -- and it's up to us to demand it.

I am thrilled to make sure you are the first to hear some very exciting news. Charlotte, North Carolina, will host the 46th Democratic National Convention in 2012.

Charlotte is a city marked by its southern charm, warm hospitality, and an "up by the bootstraps" mentality that has propelled the city forward as one of the fastest-growing in the South. Vibrant, diverse, and full of opportunity, the Queen City is home to innovative, hardworking folks with big hearts and open minds. And of course, great barbecue.

Barack and I spent a lot of time in North Carolina during the campaign -- from the Atlantic Coast to the Research Triangle to the Smoky Mountains and everywhere in between. Barack enjoyed Asheville so much when he spent several days preparing for the second presidential debate that our family vacationed there in 2009.

And my very first trip outside of Washington as First Lady was to Fort Bragg, where I started my effort to do all we can to help our heroic military families.

All the contending cities were places that Barack and I have grown to know and love, so it was a hard choice. But we are thrilled to be bringing the convention to Charlotte.

We hope many of you can join us in Charlotte the week of September 3rd, 2012. But if you can't, we intend to bring the spirit of the convention -- as well as actual, related events to your community and even your own backyard.

More than anything else, we want this to be a grassroots convention for the people. We will finance this convention differently than it's been done in the past, and we will make sure everyone feels closely tied in to what is happening in Charlotte. This will be a different convention, for a different time.

I can't believe it has been more than two years since my brother Craig introduced me at the 2008 Convention in Denver. It truly feels like it was yesterday.

As I looked out at a sea of thousands of supporters that night, I spoke about my husband -- the man whom this country would go on to elect as the 44th president of the United States. I spoke about his fundamental belief -- a conviction at the very core of his life's work -- that each of us has something to contribute to the spirit of our nation.

That's also the belief at the core of The People's Convention. That the table we sit at together ought to be big enough for everyone. That the thread that binds us -- a belief in the promise of this country -- is strong enough to sustain us through good times and bad.

Barack talked at the State of the Union of his vision for how America can win the future. Tonight I addressed the American people on the future we face together.

Though at times it may seem uncertain, it is a future that is ours to decide, ours to define, and ours to win.

I know we will.

Because, after the worst recession in decades, we see an economy growing again.

Because, after two years of job losses, we've added private-sector jobs for 12 straight months -- more than 1 million in all.

Because, time after time, when our resolve has been tested, we, as a nation, have always prevailed.

Overcoming the challenges we face today requires a new vision for tomorrow. We will move forward together, or not at all -- for the challenges we face are bigger than party, and bigger than politics.

Yet the story of America is this: We do big things.

Just as the progress of the past two years would not have been possible without your hard work, we will not realize the agenda I described tonight without you.

So as we continue this great mission together, and we set out the plans for how far we can go, I need to know that you are ready to work side by side with me once more.

Will you stand with me as we strive to win the future?

The last two years have been marked by unprecedented reforms and historic progress.

But there is much more work to do.

Moving forward, America's economic growth at home is inextricably connected to our competitiveness in the global community. The more products American companies can export, the more jobs we can create at home.

This vision for the future starts with innovation, tapping into the creativity and imagination of our people to create the jobs and industries of the future. Instead of subsidizing yesterday's energy, let's invest in tomorrow's. It's why I challenged Congress to join me in setting a new goal: By 2035, 80 percent of America's electricity will come from clean energy sources.

It means leading the world in educating our kids, giving each of our children the best opportunity to succeed and preparing them for the jobs of tomorrow.

We must build a 21st century infrastructure for our country, putting millions of Americans to work rebuilding roads and bridges and expanding high-speed Internet and high-speed rail.

We must reform government, making it leaner, smarter, and more transparent.

And we must take responsibility for our shared debt, reining in our long-term deficit so we can afford the investments we need to move our country forward.

That is the vision I laid out tonight. That is how we win the future.

It is going to take a lot of work -- but I have no doubt we are up to the task.

Half a century ago, when the Soviets beat us into space with the launch of a satellite called Sputnik, we had no idea how we'd beat them to the moon. The science wasn't there yet. NASA didn't even exist.

But after investing in better research and education, we didn't just surpass the Soviets. We unleashed a wave of innovation that created new industries and millions of new jobs.

This is our generation's Sputnik moment.

It was two years ago today that Barack and I were sworn in, and I remember what he said like it was this morning:

"The challenges we face are real, they are serious, and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America: They will be met."

Even then, we knew it would take time. We knew it would be hard. And we knew we would sometimes make mistakes.

But we did not lose sight of what we came to do.

Together, we took on difficult issues that had been put off for decades. And some say we have accomplished more in two years than any administration since Roosevelt's.

Take it from me, that's something you should take to heart -- because none of it would have been possible without your hard work.

But the job's not done.

I am reminded of that every time I travel to the small towns in Pennsylvania, Iowa, New Mexico -- all over -- and on the weekends I get home to Delaware. I meet folks who are still struggling, who want to know when the recovery will start to turn things around for their family.

These people are why we can't quit.

And moving forward with this new Congress, we will need to defend what we've achieved together as aggressively as we pursue the goals that remain.

I believe in the power of public service because I've seen what it has done throughout our country's history to combat social and economic injustice. And I am proud to say it's a story that continues in the remarkable progress we've made in the past two years. To tell it, there's a new report: Promises Kept.

There's a whole lot to be proud of.

Of course, the big ones come to mind first: historic health insurance reform, which is reining in the insurance companies and helping control the cost of care for millions of Americans; Wall Street reform, which put in place the toughest consumer protections ever; and the end of combat operations in Iraq, which brought more than 100,000 troops home.

And there is so much more you've helped achieve that is right now improving lives across the country:

    -- We passed the Recovery Act, which saved and created more than 3 million jobs, provided the largest middle-class tax cut in a generation, and made landmark investments in clean energy, infrastructure, and education.

    -- We made critical investments in General Motors and Chrysler, saving tens of thousands of jobs -- and perhaps the companies -- and spurring a rebirth of the American car industry.

    -- We wrote into law student loan reform and credit card reform, which ended the worst abuses of the banking industries and are making lending fair for American families.

    -- We put two new Supreme Court justices on the bench -- Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, who bring rich and diverse experience to the Court.

    -- We have begun to reset America's relationship with the international community, from the ratification of a new START nuclear arms treaty with Russia to tough new sanctions on Iran to strengthening our long-term partnership with a unified Iraq.

    -- And we finally repealed "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," which was the right thing to do -- not only because it makes our military stronger at a time when it needs to be the strongest, but because we are seeking that military might with an abiding sense of justice.

Telling the story of the past two years will be critical to the fights ahead. And it's not just the story of this president or this White House -- it's your story.

And it is literally proof that the organizing you do on the ground -- the conversations you have with your friends and neighbors -- is working.

Now, I'm not going to say the last two years were easy -- and I won't tell you the fights ahead are going to get any easier.

But I didn't sign up for a cake walk. And I'm pretty sure you didn't either.

We're here to move our country forward. We're here to lay a new foundation for this country -- for our economy, for our politics, and for our children's and grandchildren's futures.

And, as Barack says, what we will be able to accomplish together is in your hands.

It's how hard we all work, and how well we all tell this story.

Standing together in service

The Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., is usually remembered for his heroic leadership of the civil rights movement -- he led the successful Montgomery bus boycott, delivered the "I Have A Dream" speech at a time when such words were still controversial, and ultimately gave his own life to the cause of equality.

But Dr. King was much more than a civil rights champion -- he was a man who lived his entire life in service to others, speaking out against poverty, economic injustice, and violence. Wherever he saw suffering, he did what he could to help, no matter who it was that needed him or why they were in pain. Through his leadership, he showed us what we can accomplish when we stand together.

Each January, we remember Dr. King on his own holiday -- and one of the best ways to preserve his legacy is to engage in service ourselves. As Dr. King told us, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'"

That's why this Monday, January 17th, supporters will be participating in service projects all across the country in Dr. King's honor. There will be food drives, neighborhood clean-ups, education projects, blood drives, and more.

Will you find and sign up for an event in your area, and help make this country an even better place?

Our work is about so much more than politics -- it is about coming together through progress, change, and community. Lifting each other up in dedication and service is one of the best ways not only to honor Dr. King, but to honor each other. By giving service a new role in this country, we can establish a new foundation for our economy and a brighter future for our children.

That is why service is key to achieving our national priorities, and why Barack recently helped out at a Boys and Girls Club service event. Since moving to Washington, D.C. two years ago, he and I have gotten to know the community through similar service projects, including past Martin Luther King Day events. I treasure those opportunities, and I look forward to another one next week. Every time we pitch in, we get so much back, and always learn amazing things from our neighbors.

All of us have something to contribute, and all of us can make a meaningful difference in someone's life. It's a great way to remind others that they are not forgotten, and to remind ourselves that there are always things we can do.

I've been in Washington for almost 40 years. I've seen a lot of Congresses come and go. But I can't remember a group of lawmakers who accomplished more than the folks who just wrapped up their work.

With their help, we repealed "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and ratified the START arms control treaty. We passed a new law to rein in the abuses on Wall Street and protect consumers. We reformed the health care system and passed the Recovery Act to get our economy growing again.

But do you know why all that happened? Because people like you rolled up your sleeves, dug deep, and decided to make a difference. We had a dedicated group of lawmakers -- no doubt -- but they were supported every step of the way by folks from all across this country who were ready for change. People like you.

I know how much that means to me. And I can't even begin tell you how much it means to the President.

So here's the deal: President Obama wants to send you a note to express how grateful we are for all you did.

Two years ago, we were staring into an abyss. The financial crisis was the worst this country has faced since the Great Depression.

But this Congress passed the largest set of tax cuts for the middle class since President Reagan, the largest education reform since President Johnson, the largest infrastructure investment since President Eisenhower, and the largest clean-energy bill ever.

Now -- even though we still have a ways to go -- the economy is growing again.

Prior to this Congress, lawmakers had talked about reforming health care for almost a century. But with the President leading the way, these folks went out, and -- with you at their side -- they did it. Now 32 million more Americans will have access to health coverage.

When we came into office, just about the entire country had come to realize that "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" was wrong. More than 14,000 brave men and women had been discharged simply because of who they were. With your help, we struck down that law and made this country a more just place.

Every lawmaker who worked to accomplish these things will talk about their votes -- and the role they played in this progress -- for years. The President and I take great pride in those achievements. But each one belongs to you. You believed in them, you fought for them, and we're darn grateful.

This time of year, Americans around the country are taking the time to exchange heartfelt messages with friends and loved ones, reflecting on the past year. They write of achievements and setbacks, of births, graduations, promotions, and moves.

These messages allow us to overcome the miles that separate us. And they allow us to continue one of the most basic American traditions that has held folks close for centuries -- the simple sharing of stories.

And as families gather around holiday tables this season, we also have the opportunity to share the stories of the change this movement has achieved together.

It is a narrative woven by individuals across America -- in big cities and small towns, hospitals and classrooms, in auto manufacturing plants and auto supply stores.

These are stories of rebuilding, and of innovation. Stories of communities breathing new life into old roads and bridges, of local plants harnessing alternative fuel into new energy. Stories of small businesses getting up, dusting themselves off, and beginning to grow again. Stories of soldiers who served multiple tours of duty in Iraq now coming home -- and enjoying the holidays this year in the company of loved ones.

These are stories of progress.

They unite us, and they are ours to share.

Don't Ask, Don't Tell

Moments ago, the Senate voted to end "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

When that bill reaches my desk, I will sign it, and this discriminatory law will be repealed.

Gay and lesbian service members -- brave Americans who enable our freedoms -- will no longer have to hide who they are.

The fight for civil rights, a struggle that continues, will no longer include this one.

This victory belongs to you. Without your commitment, the promise I made as a candidate would have remained just that.

Instead, you helped prove again that no one should underestimate this movement. Every phone call to a senator on the fence, every letter to the editor in a local paper, and every message in a congressional inbox makes it clear to those who would stand in the way of justice: We will not quit.

This victory also belongs to Senator Harry Reid, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and our many allies in Congress who refused to let politics get in the way of what was right.

Like you, they never gave up, and I want them to know how grateful we are for that commitment.

I will make sure these messages are delivered -- you can also add a comment about what the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" means to you.

As Commander in Chief, I fought to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" because it weakens our national security and military readiness. It violates the fundamental American principles of equality and fairness.

But this victory is also personal.

I will never know what it feels like to be discriminated against because of my sexual orientation.

But I know my story would not be possible without the sacrifice and struggle of those who came before me -- many I will never meet, and can never thank.

I know this repeal is a crucial step for civil rights, and that it strengthens our military and national security. I know it is the right thing to do.

But the rightness of our cause does not guarantee success, and today, celebration of this historic step forward is tempered by the defeat of another -- the DREAM Act. I am incredibly disappointed that a minority of senators refused to move forward on this important, commonsense reform that most Americans understand is the right thing for our country. On this issue, our work must continue.

Today, I'm proud that we took these fights on.

Your senators need to hear from you right away.

Tomorrow, they will cast important votes on two huge issues: the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and passage of the DREAM Act.

When the clerk of the Senate calls the roll, the outcome for both these bills could go either way. The only thing that we know with certainty is that each vote will be extremely close. And because there are so few days left in 2010, this might be our final opportunity to move forward on either of these issues.

Right now, we need you to call your senators and ask them to support both the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and passage of the DREAM Act.

President Obama and the leadership of our armed forces have together asked Congress to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." It's obvious that the time for this change has come -- simple fairness demands it. This vote is our chance to do so.

The DREAM Act is a critical piece of immigration reform -- it will offer a pathway to citizenship for young people who are willing to serve in our armed forces or attend college.

If your lawmakers are supporting these measures, let them know they have your thanks. If your senators are undecided or opposed to these measures, please ask them to do what is right.

Time is running out to see progress on these critical issues.

The single best thing you can do to help support the President is to call your senators right now. For lawmakers who have yet to make up their minds on how they'll vote on the DREAM Act or "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" repeal, calls from constituents could make all the difference.

On Thursday, Republicans in the Senate stood in the way of progress, blocking legislation to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

No surprise there -- they've been turning a blind eye to the majority of Americans, legions of grassroots Democrats, and fellow lawmakers who've supported repeal for some time now.

But now, they're also ignoring top military leaders -- from Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Admiral Mike Mullen to former Secretary of State Colin Powell -- who support overturning this policy. They're ignoring the 70 percent of American servicemen and women who say that repeal wouldn't negatively affect morale, and the Pentagon study that says it won't affect troop readiness.

They're no longer simply holding up progress that would advance the American values of fairness and equality, enrich our military, and strengthen our national security -- they seem to be willing to tune out just about anyone, all in the name of a political tally mark.

But we're not done fighting.

We need just three votes to move forward on repeal -- and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and our allies in the Senate have promised that the Senate will vote on repeal again before the year is out.

Your voice could be the difference right now: Write the Senate Republicans who are currently blocking repeal and tell them to stop playing politics with people's lives.

We couldn't have gotten to this point without your support.

Thousands of you added your names in support of the President's call for repeal. Those petitions -- 582,000 in total -- were delivered by volunteers to Senator Susan Collins's office on Thursday morning.

Now, your voice could make sure this discriminatory policy is overturned before Congress adjourns -- and that it doesn't have to wait another year, or for another Congress to take it up.

And by reaching out to senators standing in the way, you will make this issue harder and harder for them to tune out.

Veterans Day

Veterans Day provides us with the chance to mark the debt of honor we owe to all those who have worn the uniform of the United States. We remember those who gave their lives beneath our flag, in service of our freedom.

And with so many still fighting, we owe special thanks to the courageous families of those who serve.

Because when our servicemen and women deploy overseas, their loved ones are left to undertake heroic battles of their own at home. The unique challenges they face in support of men and women in uniform allow us all to enjoy the freedoms of our democracy.

Every time I have a chance to meet with these families, I'm struck by their strength and their quiet dignity -- they are truly some of the most selfless, courageous people I've met.

And today is also a day to acknowledge the sacrifices these brave men and women make every day, and pray for the safe return of those they love.

I've felt their calling personally, and I want to encourage Americans across the country to step up and do more for our military families. Take the time to stay informed about the concerns and activities of the families of service members in your community. Let them know you recognize their struggles and appreciate all they do.

You can help by finding out the needs of the military families in your community and volunteering, from working with your local school's PTA to hiring a military spouse.

Remember when the GOP was in control?

They drove up record deficits to pass tax cuts for the wealthy at the expense of the middle class.

And now they want to do it again. If they take over Congress, Republicans have promised to go back to the "exact same agenda" that drove our economy into a ditch.

I come into this election with clear eyes.

  -- Pat Toomey is running for Senate in Pennsylvania. He wants to de-regulate Big Oil and open up the Great Lakes for drilling.

  -- Christine O'Donnell, who is vying for the same Senate seat I was honored to hold in Delaware, is campaigning on repealing health reform.

The fact is this: The corporate special interests trying to elect these Republicans don't care if they're supporting extremists.

They just want us out of the way. With your help, we've enacted historic reforms despite their best efforts to derail us. Now, they're focused on one thing -- creating a Congress in which they can call the shots once again.

Yesterday morning, Republicans unveiled their plan for governing -- their Pledge to America.

They're pledging to cut taxes for millionaires and billionaires.

They're pledging to roll back regulations on big oil and Wall Street.

They're pledging to strike down rules reining in the credit card lenders and the insurance companies.

They're pledging to increase the deficit by trillions of dollars.

Their agenda is a windfall for the folks spending millions to put them back in power -- the lobbyists, the big corporations, and the special interests.

We're not sitting by watching this scheme become a reality. Our plan to win this fall is as different from that of the GOP as our agenda for the country.

We've got organizers on the ground in every state, working with campaigns and volunteers to coordinate an unprecedented voter-turnout operation.

We're knocking on thousands of doors and making millions of calls to get our voters out to the polls.
